Mares, 23, a former 2004 Olympian, dropped Fulgencio with a hard left hook to the liver in the 6th round, sending Fulgencio down on the canvas in pain.

Referee Raul Caiz Jr. then moved in and halted the bout at 2:24 with Fulgencio still down. Mares, ranked #3 IBF, #4 WBO, and #8 WBC, fought superbly as he mixed up his punches well from the body to the head in the fight.

Mares was facing a taller fighter than him in Fulgencio, who was four inches taller at 5’9″ compared to the 5’5″ of Mares. However, Mares didn’t let the height disadvantage slow him down as he attacked Fulgencio with a steady flow of punches to the body and head, not giving him much of a break for the full six rounds.

In the 1st round, Mares started off fast, backing Fulgencio with big looping right hand hooks and fast 1-2 combinations to the head. Mares mixed up his punches well and never seemed to throw a punch in the same place or the same manner. Just when you though Mares was throwing nothing but hooks, he’d start straightening them out and landing fast punches down the middle. The different variety of punches had Fulgencio looking very confused with how to defend them.

Mares continued his furious attack in the 2nd round, moving forward and landing effectively with hard body shots. Fulgencio would try to fire back from time to time, but Mares kept him too under a constant rain of punches and it had the effect of making Fulgencio not want to throw anything back.

In the 3rd round, Mares landed a nice left-right to the head and followed it with a powerful triple left hook to the body that had Fulgencio bending forward to absorb the shots. Late in the round, Fulgencio finally started letting his hands go a little bit, perhaps sensing the fight was getting out of hand. However, Fulgencio’s punches had little on them and seemed to be thrown more out of desperation than out of the will to win the fight.

Mares stayed close to Fulgencio in the 4th round, battering him with an unending amount of hooks to the body and straight shots to the head. Every once in awhile, Mares would throw a big looping right hand that would land with a thud. That punch seemed to do a lot of damage each time Mares would land it, because Fulgencio was never able to block any of them.

In the 5th round, Fulgencio used his jab well to try and keep Mares at a distance. It worked somewhat early in the round, but in the last minute of the round, Mares came in and landed some blistering shots to the head and body of Fulgencio. By this time, the fight looked to be a complete route, as Fulgencio was taking a great deal of punishment.

In the 6th round, Mares went after the tired and beaten Fulgencio, unloading on him with a storm of shots one after another to the head and body. Finally, Mares put an end to matters with a big left hook to the midsection that sent Fulgencio down on the canvas. The fight was then stopped immediately by referee Raul Caiz Jr.
