Foreman III vs. Burrage This Friday

By Jason Kim: Undefeated George Foreman III (1-0, 1 KO’s) will be making his second fight of his career on Friday night against winless George Burrage (0-5) in a scheduled four round bout at the Pan American Center, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Foreman III, the son of former boxing great George Foreman, will be looking to improve upon his past fight last month, a 1st round knockout over Clyde Weaver.

The young 26-year-old Foreman looked at times like a chip off the old block as he resembled his father a lot with his use of uppercuts, hooks and power shots. However, Foreman III, showed a lot less power and skills than his famous father. Foreman rushed Weaver at the start of the fight, hammering him mostly with uppercuts to the head and not looking particularly power or fast unfortunately.

Foreman hurt Weaver with a right hand uppercut which had Weaver cringing and covering up as Foreman blasted away at him with massive shots. Weaver quickly went down under a rain of punches. Weaver got to his feet and the mismatch was allowed to continue for a little while longer.

Foreman ran up to Weaver and tagged him with a volley of head shots, sending Weaver down for the second time. The referee then stepped in and wisely stopped the bout as the crowd booed the action in anger and frustration. Weaver, a heavyset fighter, looked like he didn’t belong anywhere near a ring and it was disappointing that he had been chosen as Foreman’s opponent.

Surely, Foreman couldn’t have gotten anything out of the win because Weaver never attempted to throw a punch as far as I could tell. Something tells me that this Saturday night’s opponent will be a fighter similar to Weaver. I hope not, but my guess is that it probably will be.

Foreman III didn’t have an amateur career like his famous father, so at 26, he’s going to be moved a lot slower than then older Foreman was. By looking at Foreman III’s fight last month, I don’t know that he’ll ever be anything more than a curiosity. I don’t see the building blocks of future heavyweight contender or champion. The power, jab, speed and boxing skills aren’t there at this point.

With time and the help from his father, I suspect that Foreman III will improve his jab and his skills but the lack of power and speed will likely limit his growth as a fighter. At 26, those two assets should already be in place and it’s worrisome that he doesn’t have those qualities.

Unless they materialize out of thin air, Foreman III is going to have some problems moving forward in his career. I don’t whether or not he’d be comfortable being a journeyman fighter or not, but that could end up being the case for him unless he quits at some point once he starts suffering defeats. He’ll get a lot of help from his dad to make him the best he can be, but he’s got to show more than he did in his last fight or else it might not matter how much help Foreman III gets.
