I’m Starting to Lose Respect for Pacquiao

pac3336By Manuel Perez: The more I hear about Manny Pacquiao looking for a bout against Miguel Cotto the more I lose complete respect for Manny. First Pacquiao fights a shot and weight drained Oscar De La Hoya, who had to agree to come in at one of Pacquiao’s catch weight requests, then Pacquiao fights another shot fighter in Ricky Hatton, who also looked weight drained.

And if that wasn’t enough, the word that’s moving around is that Pacquiao will be fighting the scarred up left eye Miguel Cotto next. Man, what perfect timing, eh? Cotto just gets out of a life and death match with Joshua Clottey that if you were being kind would call a draw for Cotto and now Pacquiao is looking at fighting him. What happened to Shane Mosley?

I mean I know Pacquiao will never fight him because he’s probably far too dangerous for him, but come on, do the right thing and show who you are, Pacquiao. Catch weights, opponents that are weight drained and with diminished ability to take a punch.

I think I’m officially sick of Pacquiao. I want him to either retire or move back down and pick on fighters in his own weight class, preferably good ones like Juan Manuel Marquez rather than hunting down lesser fighters in the lightweight division.

Choosing Cotto right now is like going after an easy mark. Cotto looked like utter crap against Clottey, and there’s no point in the fight. That is such a major waste of time for Pacquiao. He needs to either take the fight with Mosley or else shove Mayweather aside and give Marquez a rightful rematch.

Now that would be a meaningful fight. Beating up on a near defenseless Cotto wouldn’t even be sport. That would be like taking a bunch of chickens, putting them in a cage and then letting them out while you stand over them with a shotgun poised to spray bird shot at them.

It’s hardly fair to beat up on Cotto. He looked pathetic against Clottey, running around the ring in wide circles like a track star. I think the powerful Mexican Antonio Margarito left some damaging effects with his 11th round beating of Cotto last year and what we’re seeing now is diminishing returns on the part of Cotto.

If it gets Pacquiao off to beat a fighter like this, then so beat it, go ahead and get him. But I won’t have anything good to say about it, you can bet on that. I’ll long and loud about the wrongness of a fight like this. Cotto needs to get his act together and try beating some fighters in a convincing manner without taking major punishment.

Cotto looked like he ran into a truck face first in his fight with Clottey last Saturday, and it wasn’t just the cut from the head butt. Cotto got hit with a mess of right hands and looked pretty well beaten up by the end of the fight. I’d like to see Cotto fight Clottey again, as I said previously, and prove that he can beat him.
