De La Hoya – “Mosley is too big a threat” [for Pacquiao]

pac45434551By Manuel Perez: According to The Ring web site, boxing great Oscar De La Hoya feels that Shane Mosley would “crush Pacquiao in a heartbeat.” De La Hoya feels that Pacquiao won’t fight Mosley, because Shane is too dangerous for Pacquiao to fight. There you have it from one of the best boxers that ever breathed in the great De La Hoya. I have to agree with Oscar about that. De La Hoya really knows his fighters. The dude is smart.

Pacquiao is a good fighter, but I think Mosley would easily beat him. To sum up why Pacquiao won’t fight Mosley, De La Hoya said “Mosley is too big a threat.” You can say that again, Oscar.

I think Mosley is in another league than Pacquiao and it would be a pretty bad mismatch from start to finish. What gets me is that when Mosley came to Freddie Roach’s gym and asked for a fight with Pacquiao, Roach asked Mosley if he could come down to a ridiculously low 142 pound catch weight for a fight with Pacquiao.

Mosley, who was probably suspicious that he was being set up to lose by being asked to come in at a weight draining 142, fired off that he didn’t think he could. But after thinking about it, Mosley realized that he could come in at that weight and still beat Pacquiao. Next, when Mosley lets Pacquiao’s team know that he’s willing to not only meet Pacquiao at 142, but he’s also acceptable to taking the smaller purse cut at 40%.

You would think that Roach would instantly say ‘okay, let’s do it.’ Instead, Mosley is brushed aside. That’s so hilarious and predictable. Even if Mosley had said that he was willing to fight Pacquiao immediately, he would have probably been met with a cold stare or some other hoop that he would have had to jump through for the fight to happen.

In other words, I don’t think that Mosley was ever seriously considered as a potential opponent for Pacquiao because of his good boxing skills, hand speed, experience, talent and power. De La Hoya agrees with me, saying that Mosley would beat Pacquiao because of Shane’s “Speed and brains.”

It wouldn’t be a fair fight no matter how far Mosley is asked to go. The wins over De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales hardly count in my eyes because in almost every case, they were either weight drained or on the slide with their skills fading.

Mosley isn’t fading and is one of the youngest 37-year-old boxers that I’ve ever seen before.
