By William Mackay: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. fired off a salvo at Ricky Hatton and his assistant trainer Lee Beard for Ricky’s 2nd round KO loss to Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather Sr. hasn’t conversed with Hatton, 30, since the loss and appears that he never will at this point. Mayweather Sr. says that the problems in the Hatton camp were due to assistant trainer Beard conducting boxing training sessions with Hatton without Mayweather Sr. being present for the training.

Mayweather Sr. appeared upset that Hatton wasn’t listening to him in the corner during the fight. In looking at the fight, it was noticeable that Hatton was indeed looking at and listening to Beard part of the time in between the 1st and 2nd rounds.

However, Hatton put most of his attention on Mayweather Sr. when he was giving instructions to him. Hatton looked hurt, desperate and not in the condition to apply anything that either of the trainers were telling him to do.

Hatton would have needed much more than a plan of just keeping his hands up if he wanted to survive another round against Pacquiao, as he was too badly hurt to continue for long unless he grabbed Pacquiao and held onto him for the full three minutes of the 2nd round.

Mayweather Sr. sees the results of the fight being caused directly by Hatton not listening to him and following the instructions of Beard. Mayweather Sr. feels that Beard didn’t give the right advice to Hatton, and Mayweather Sr. doesn’t seem to take any responsibility for the loss.

This is kind of a tricky thing, because Hatton definitely wasn’t applying some of the things that Mayweather Sr. had been seen teaching Hatton in training. However, Mayweather Sr. probably needed to take control over the training a little bit better than he did when he saw that there was a problem with Beard.

When Mayweather first saw Hatton and Beard training together on their own away from him, Mayweather Sr., should have stepped in and put a halt to that or else threatened to walk out. Who knows? Hatton may not have cared if Mayweather had done this, but at least Mayweather could have gotten out early before the situation worsened.

Hatton would have likely been just as messed up as he turned out to be if Beard had taken over as the head trainer, because it looks as if Hatton was on cruise control on the night of the fight, following his own game plan rather than anything that Beard or Mayweather were trying to tell him to do.

It’s unknown what Hatton will do next. One thing is sure, Mayweather Sr. probably won’t be with Hatton if he decides to continue fighting. Hatton’s father said that Hatton will be making his decision to retire or not by the end of the month. He said that Hatton will likely stick to his decision once he makes it. It seems that Hatton will likely continue fighting if only for one more fight before retiring.
