By Manuel Perez: Antonio Margarito and his trainer may have had their boxing licenses revoked by the California State Athletic Commission for alleged illegal wraps, but that won’t keep Margarito from going ahead and fighting anyway, either in Las Vegas, Nevada or Mexico. Either way, Margarito won’t be stopped by this and will continue on with his excellent boxing career.
The thing of it is, Margarito wasn’t planning on fighting until June anyway, so the 12 month suspension is really more of an 8 month license revocation and that’s not really that much of a big deal either, because Margarito, according to his promoter Bob Arum, has already been contacted by several cities in Mexico where he can fight and still make big money.
So you see, this license revocation, is more of a local one than something more world wild. In effect, when you look at the license revocation, it really doesn’t have much teeth. It may stop Margarito from fighting in California and possibly other places in the U.S., but that’s not a clear case.
If Vegas doesn’t honor the license revocation, then Margarito comes out smelling like a rose and continues to fight in front of packed houses and on PPVs, regardless of what California says. Most of the big money fights are in Las Vegas and Atlantic City anyways, so it hardly matters if Margarito can’t fight in California for 8 months.
And, if this license revocation does turn out to be a national one effecting all of the states, then as I said already, Margarito can always move his fights to Mexico where he’s quite popular and lives. He wins no matter what he does! That’s got to hurt boxing fans that dislike Margarito and are chanting for him to be banned for life from boxing.
It’s not like that, and I hate to be the one to break it to them. When a person has skills that are as highly sought after as Margarito, there’s always a buyer for his talent and little way to keep him from earning a living in his profession. All the California State Athletic Commission has done with this decision is cheat California boxing fans, and potentially others in the U.S if the other states uphold the California commission’s decision, from seeing Margarito fight.
He’ll still, make no mistake about that, make big bank as well and there’s not much they can do about that. Until these license revocation become a worldwide thing, which I can tell you will never happen in a million years, then they effectively have no teeth other than a label that is planted on Margarito.
