lem2.jpgBy Aaron Klein: Unbeaten light middleweight prospect David Lemieux (12-0, 12 KOs) continued his perfect knockout streak with a 2nd round TKO over Patrick Tessier (3-8, 2 KOs) on Saturday night to win the vacant Quebec Boxing Council (CQB) light middleweight title at the Montreal Casino, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Lemieux, only 19, dropped Tessier four times in the fight, twice in the 1st round and another two times in the 2nd round. After the 4th knockdown, a devastating left-right combination, referee Marlon Wright stopped the fight at 2:50 of the 2nd round.

Lemieux, a Canadian, is still work in progress and probably a little undersized at only 5’9″ for the light middleweight division, yet his power is very much real. He hits as hard as any of the top light middleweights in the division, possibly even harder than James Kirkland or Alfredo Angulo, two of the hardest punchers in the light middleweight division. However, his defense is virtually nonexistent, making him susceptible to getting hit a lot. Indeed, Tessier, 29, had little trouble landing powerful right hands to the head of Lemieux in the short two rounds of the fight.

However, with Lemieux’s huge power and incredible body punching, he makes it hard for his opponents to concentrate much on their own offense due to the kind of shots that he’s throwing at them. Lemieux wasted little time in going right after Tessier in the first round, throwing hard combinations to the head, and blistering body shots that looked harder than any light middleweight that I’ve seen in quite some time.

Near the end of the round, Lemieux dropped Tessier with a huge right hand to the head. Showing a good chin, Tessier got up at the count of seven. With the power that Lemieux put into the shot, probably most fighters would have been gravely hurt and unable to continue after being on the receiving end of something as hard as that. However, Tessier got to his feet, looking badly and continued fighting. Lemieux then hit him several more times before dropping him again with a single right hand to the head. The round ended after Tessier got up. He probably wouldn’t have been able to survive the round if there were a little more time left in the round.

In the second round, Lemieux continued battering Tessier with huge shots to the head and body. At point, he hit him with a big right hand that caused Tessier to reach down on the canvas with both gloves to keep from falling. Strangely enough, referee Marlon Wright didn’t call it a knockdown, even though he clearly reached out with both gloves and touched the canvas after being clocked with a hard right hand from Lemieux. It didn’t matter, though, because moments later, Lemieux dropped Tessier with a straight right to the head.

Tessier got up, shaking his head to try and clear it. He was then met with a hail of punches from Lemieux, who backed Tessier up against the ropes and began flailing away at him with lefts and rights. Finally, he put him out of his misery with a hard left hook to the head followed by a chopping right hand. Like before, Tessier got up off the canvas, but this time referee Marlon Wright stopped the bout at 2:50 of the 2nd rather than allowing the slaughter to continue.
