Alexander: I beat Matthysse at 60%

matthysse2222By Allan Fox: IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander chose to take a big shot at Lucas Matthysse’s positive attention last Saturday night at the post-fight press conference following Alexander’s 7th round stoppage win over Lee Purdy at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Instead of letting Matthysse enjoy his 3rd round TKO triumph over Lamont Peterson in the main event, Alexander claimed that he was fighting at only 60 percent when he beat Matthysse by a highly controversial 10 round split decision in June 2011.

Alexander said “When I beat Matthysse I was 50, perhaps 60 percent. My legs weren’t there; I was worn out, drained. I didn’t have any energy and I had to tough the win out. Just imagine if I was at 100 percent.”

bellew4543By Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1-1, 12 KO’s) will be getting what many boxing fans feel is an undeserved rematch against #3 WBC, Isaac Chilemba (20-1-2, 9 KO’s) this Saturday night on the undercard of the Carl Froch vs. Mikkel Kessler fight card at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Bellew, #1 WBC, fought to a controversial 12 round draw against Chilemba last March in Bellew’s hometown of Liverpool, UK, and he Bellew looked terrible in that fight, getting beaten to the punch all night long.

Chavez Jr. beats Canelo with ease

chavez45By Dan Ambrose: A match-up that would draw a huge amount of interest in the boxing world is a fight between former WBC middleweight champion and the current WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. This fight is a no-brainer in that it would create huge pay per view ratings if it were scheduled on one of the Mexican holidays like Cinco de Mayo where they could take advantage of a huge Mexican population enjoying the holiday festivities.

Unfortunately it may never happen despite Chavez Jr. and his promoters at Top Rank really wanting the fight. Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Canelo, are cool to the idea of matching him against the heavier and much more active Chavez Jr. Canelo comes into his fights weighing in the lower 170s, whereas Chavez Jr. comes into his fights weighing in the lower 180s up to 190.

Masters of the Sweet Science – Gene Tunney

tunney433By Mohummad Humza Elahi: Amidst the hype and fireworks that comes with the modern age of boxing, those that came a few generations prior are often forgotten in the annals of history; what true boxing fans appreciate is a glimpse into the archives to take a look at fights that have survived the test of time, those great contests where boxers fought 15 hard rounds and racked up incredible records (for instance, the only man to defeat Tunney was Harry Greb, whose own record stands at a jaw-dropping 261-20 from 299 fights) but when you take a closer look at the footage that still exists, you can see the seeds of the sweet science, those that took a rigorous approach in understanding the body mechanics and movements of fighters and how one could develop plans to neutralize the opposition.

“I did six years of planning to win the championship from Jack Dempsey.” – Gene Tunney Gene “The Fighting Marine” Tunney was an incredible boxer. He often studied his opponents prior to and during fights and adjusted his style to suit the situation in front of him.

140, 147 and 154 divisions the new Pacquiao

matthysse564By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: Floyd doesn’t call fighters out anymore. He doesn’t need to. They call him out. And so far, boxers from 140 to 154 have been calling him out from a fight. Before Manny Pacquiao was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez, he was the only one that could seemingly beat undefeated pound for pound champ Floyd Mayweather.

This had come on the heels of him beating Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton; both of whom lost to Floyd first. But now that Pac has been knocked out, the media has removed that “he can beat Mayweather” mantle and have cast it on the 140; 147, and 154 pound divisions. Saul Canelo Alvarez is the most lucrative fight out their financially.

Devon Alexander suffers fractured left hand

alexander5654By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander’s 7th round stoppage win over his pitifully over-matched British opponent Lee Purdy last Saturday night was a costly one for the 26-year-old Alexander because he broke his left hand in the fight, and the injury will likely keep Alexander out of action until December.

Alexander suffered a fracture fifth metacarpal in his left hand. Alexander broke the bone will teeing off on the punching bag-like Purdy in the 1st round at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Alexander showed great heart to fight through the injury and continue to pelt Purdy with left hands until the fourth at which time he moved to throwing exclusively right hands.

Froch vs. Kessler II: Redemption

froch#6By Dan Henderson: This Saturday night will see the highly anticipated rematch between Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler. Their first fight was an action packed twelve rounder in which Kessler was announced the winner via a unanimous decision with scores of 116–112, 115–113 and 117–111. I had scored the bout closer than that but that is now history, the question on everyone’s lips is can Froch win the rematch?

I believe that he will, since the fight Froch has gone on to become the IBF super middleweight champion after mauling former unbeaten champion Lucian Bute inside five rounds in Nottingham. I’m not saying this will be an easy fight because Kessler is a world class operator who will bring everything to this fight.

Floyd Mayweather, opinion doesn’t matter – Part 2!

mayweather434By Tom Drury: First of all I want to say thanks for the huge response I got from my last article, there is nothing quite like a good debate and argument. Some good credible points of view were put forward, however the uneducated “Floyd ducked Pac” “Floyd the cherry picker” comments made an appearance.

Everybody is entitled to there personal opinion, my problem is this is a boxing forum and I pride myself on writing articles backed up by facts. I am quite sure many fans on this forum are driven by dislike for Mayweather as a man and maybe a little symptom of envy.

Froch brands Groves & Cleverly as disloyal for them helping Kessler with training

froch2By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) wasn’t pleased at hearing the news that WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and unbeaten British super middleweight contender George Groves both helped out WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler with sparring to get him ready for his fight with Froch this Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Froch said to the telegraph.co.uk “They’d rather go out there and help a foreign fighter prepare for the biggest fight of my career…the fact that Groves – and I think Nathan Cleverly – has gone out there to help him, sums up what they are: they are quite bitter and jealous and they want to fight with me, but it’s not happening because I’m a league above them.”
