Who could have beaten Mayweather?

floyd#300By Bob Smith: As it stands now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. fights are beautiful in that the viewer gets to see him display his defense, quick attacks and counter-punches, and also speed and power but are “boring” in the sense that he completely dominates anyone that he fights. This has been the story for several years now, and even though he is 36, amazingly, this continues.

I honestly don’t see a fighter today that could cause Mayweather problems, much less defeat him, Some say that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez would be a good match for Mayweather, but the resume of Alvarez is weak, and though he did show significant improvement in his fight versus Austin Trout, anything remotely resembling a catchweight will negate the major advantage of the punching power of Alvarez, and Mayweather will insist on something that approximates a catchweight.

If Canelo believes he can beat Mayweather, he should fight him at 147

canelo400By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez isn’t popular enough to call the shots to Floyd Mayweather Jr. to tell him that he has to come up to 154 to fight him. If Canelo only 22-years-old, and he doesn’t have the experience or the fan base to pressure Mayweather to ever fight him at 154.

When you’re a young fighter like Canelo, you’re supposed to pay your dues and fight the more experienced, more talented and the much accomplished fighter at his own weight, not yours.

Arum wants Mike Alvarado back in the fall in Denver

alvarado33By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is looking to have interim WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KO’s) return to the ring in the fall in his home city of Denver, Colorado, according to Steve Kim.

Arum doesn’t have an opponent picked out for the soon to be 33-year-old Alvarado, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure that it’ll likely be Ruslan Provodnikov if Arum can convince him to drop down from the welterweight division to take that fight.

Kessler unconcerned with Froch’s threat to kill him

kessler600(Photo Credit: Thomas Sjoerup) By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) basically laughed off IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s comments made yesterday about wanting to kill him if he has to this Saturday night in their pay per view unification fight at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Kessler is totally unafraid of Froch after having easily handled him three years ago in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision.

Kessler said on his twitter “Carl Froch says he wants to kill me. That’s not very polite. :)”

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Brian Vera on August 3rd in catchweight fight at 165 lbs

chavez34By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) won’t have to worry about melting down to 160 lbs. for his next fight on August 3rd in Mexico city, Mexico. According to Steve Kim, Bob Arum of Top Rank is reporting that Chavez Jr. will be fighting middleweight contender Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KO’s) next in a catch weight of 165 pounds.

Chavez Jr. had been in negotiations previously with recent title challenger Martin Murray, but the two were unable to successfully negotiate the fight. Perhaps it’s for the best because Murray wanted the fight to take place at 160 lbs. and it would have been really difficult for Chavez Jr. to get down to the 160 lb. limit.

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye is still healing up from his hand injury that he suffered recently in training for his comeback fight against #8 WBC Manuel Charr. Cleverly calls Froch a hypocrite

BOXING(Photo Credit: Lawrence Lustig) By Scott Gilfoid: Recently, IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch was up in arms just because WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and super middleweight contender George Groves, neither which are friends with him, chose to spar with WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler upon receiving an invitation from him to help him get ready for the Froch fight this Saturday night.

Froch took it as a sign of Groves and Cleverly being disloyal to him because he’s from the UK like they are, so they shouldn’t help a fighter from another country.

Cleverly remembers how Froch helped out Kessler last December in giving him pointers in how to beat Ireland’s Brian Magee, and his advice helped Kessler stop Magee in the 3rd round by series of hard body shots.

Calzaghe picks Froch to beat Kessler

By Scott Gilfoid: You can add former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe to the long list of people who think that IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) will defeat WBA champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) this Saturday night in their rematch.

Calzaghe thinks Kessler isn’t the same fighter he was back in 2007 when Calzaghe fought him and won a close 12 round unanimous decision.

Mayweather Sr. not impressed with Matthysse

matthysse4By Dan Ambrose: If WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) can get past WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) in their proposed fight on September 7th, Matthysse could wind up facing WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) in 2014.

Matthysse, a Golden Boy Promotions fighter, would be high on the list of potential opponents for Mayweather just by the virtue of Matthysse having cleaned out the 140 lb. division of some of the top fighters.

However, Mayweather’s father Floyd Mayweather Sr. isn’t all that impressed with Matthysse apart from admiring his power. Mayweather Sr. does like Matthysse’s power, but he doesn’t see him as having great skills to go along with that power.

Kessler expects Froch to come out fast and make mistakes

froch966By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) believe that IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) has worked himself up to such an emotional state to where he’s going to come out incredibly out of the blocks this Saturday night and make a ton of mistakes that could lead to Froch getting knocked out in front of his loyal British faithful at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Kessler said “Froch has put himself under big pressure by saying all sorts of things, but I know when a fighter does that he can make mistakes, big mistakes. Carl came out very fast against [Lucian] Bute and we all saw what happened. But if he is going to be a bit too aggressive…it will suit me.”
