Wladimir Klitschko vs. Alexander Povetkin is in jeopardy over drug testing

wladimir564By Allan Fox: The October 5th fight between IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (60-3, 51 KO’s) and WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (26-0, 18 KO’s) is reportedly in jeopardy due to the two heavyweight unable to agree on which drug testing agency will do the testing for the fight.

A Look Back on This Weekend’s Boxing – 17 & 18th May, 2013

peterson454By Shane Newsome: Welcome readers to my weekly column which takes an informative, un-bias, retrospective look back on just what went on at the weekend, with reports on the biggest and best boxing action from across the globe.

This week we saw the good, bad and ugly sides of boxing. Including the rise of a new star in Lucas Matthysse, the re-emergence of some old ones in Shane Mosley and Guillermo Jones and perhaps the beginning of an end for some present ones in Lamont Peterson and Denis Lebedev.

So as usual we start our look back in the same place we begun our preview, on Friday at Crocus City Hall, Moscow, Russia and the WBA ‘Regular’ World heavyweight title defense for unbeaten Russian Alexander Povetkin (26-0) against challenger and previously unbeaten Pole Andrzej Wawrzyk (27-1).

Povetkin stops Wawrzyk; Guillermo Jones defeats Lebedev

Hasim Rahman vs Alexander Povetkin(Picture: Photo Wende) By Scott Gilfoid: In embarrassingly easy victory, WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (26-0, 18 KO’s) easily stopped previously unbeaten fringe contender Andrzej Wawrzyk (27-1, 13 KO’s) in the 3rd round of a three-knockdown performance on Friday night at the Crocus City Hall, in Moscow, Russia.

Povetkin dropped Wawrzyk once in the 2nd round from a hard right hand, and then twice in the 3rd round. After the second knockdown in the 3rd, referee Russell Mora halted the fight at 2:28 with Wawrzyk still down from a left hand to the head.

Povetkin-Wawrzyk: Alexander takes risky stay busy fight this Friday night, May 17th in Moscow, Russia

povetkin41By Eric Thomas: WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (25-0, 17 KO’s) has decided to slip in a stay busy tune-up fight against little known fringe contender Andrzej Wawrzyk (27-0, 13 KO’s) this Friday night at the Crocus City Hall, in Moscow, Russia.

This is a fight that is supposed to get the 6’2” Povetkin ready for a huge money showdown against the 6’6” IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko this summer, but it’s doubtful that the 6’5” Wawrzyk will be any kind of preparation for what Povetkin will be facing this summer when he gets in the ring with Wladimir.

The undefeated heavyweights, bright futures or inevitable declines?

fury43323By Scott Bells: It says a lot when promoters have to pad out fighters records to ensure they remain unbeaten simply due to the fact that the two who sit at the top of the tree (The Klitschkos) are so much better than the rest.

This is what, in my opinion, many promoters are doing as there is clearly a number of grades of fighters in the heavyweight division; some can make it to the top and others will not recover from the inevitable first career loss that most, if not all, will suffer to a Klitschko or a Haye type on the way through.
Let’s break them down…..
