By Anthony Montero – An action packed card of boxing put together by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions certainly kept the fight fans entertained. Headlining the event was local favorite undefeated Featherweight prospect Julian Ramirez from East Los Angeles. He squared off against the durable Raul Hidalgo, of Mexico, who was definitely a game challenger.

The third man in the ring Lou Moret did an excellent job of not interfering and letting the action continue between the pugilists when a brawl broke out in the center of the ring during the first few rounds. The action was fought in close quarters like a phone booth. By the third round brawling took a backseat and disciplined boxing took over. Ramirez used distance and timing to set up his punches in combination behind his jab, while beautifully slipping his opponents shots.

Ramirez’s early body work paid dividends later in the fight as it was visible Hidalgo was slowing down. In the ninth round Ramirez landed a flush left upper cut that appeared to break Hidalgo’s nose as blood immediately streamed from both nostrils. Hidalgo stayed in the fight making it a competitive bout until the end, however the superior skill set and intelligent boxing of Ramirez proved to be too much.

Make no mistake, Hidalgo made Ramirez earn the hard fought victory. Although all three judges scored the bout 100-90, it was anything but a boring lopsided fight. From start to finish it was an action packed war of crude brawling to slick boxing. With the win Ramirez improved to 14-0 with 8 KO’s. There is much promise in this young rising prospect, if he continues on this path further developing his craft, don’t be surprised to see him in title shot contention soon.
