Khan with few options for his May 23rd fight

khan45673By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) won’t be getting a big name or even a moderately good name for his next fight.

According to Fighthype, the 28-year-old Khan is looking to fight on May 23rd. But unfortunately for Khan all the top fighters will be either busy with another fight, or recovering from a fight. You can see that as a negative or a positive for Khan depending on how you want to look at it.

Adrien Broner said earlier today that he’d be willing to fight Khan at the end of this month. However, I’m not so sure that their adviser Al Haymon is going to want to match the two of them together.

Haymon is doing a lot of mixing and matching with his fighters in the Premier Boxing Champions league, but that’s mainly a case where Haymon is matching A-level guys against B level fighters.

I don’t see Haymon matching Broner and Khan together. I think Haymon is going to continue to match them against other guys rather than putting them in together.

Khan won’t be able to fight Top Rank fighters Brandon Rios and Tim Bradley due to Haymon not working with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.

Keith Thurman and Robert Guerrero are both recovering from their brutal fight, and they won’t be ready to return to the ring by May 23rd to fight Khan. Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao are already scheduled to fight on May 2nd, and even if they were available, it’s unlikely that they would fight Khan.

Shawn Porter is already fighting this Friday night against Roberto Garcia, and he’s not likely to be able to get back in the ring two months later to fight Khan, even if that’s a fight Khan were interested in. I don’t think it is. Andre Berto and Josesito Lopez are also fighting this Friday night, and they likely won’t be able to get back in the ring in two months to fight Khan.

IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook has a fight scheduled for the end of this month on March 28th against Jo Jo Dan, so there’s no way Khan can get a fight against Brook either. Marcos Maidana won’t be fighting until late September, according to his trainer Robert Garcia.

With Khan no longer holding a world title belt, I doubt Maidana would want to waste time fighting Khan again. Maidana wants guys with world titles in their possession, and the last time I checked, Khan lost his two straps in a defeat at the hands of Lamont Peterson in 2011. Khan still hasn’t avenged that defeat or attempted to avenge it as of yet.

The best possible thing for Khan to do would be to wait until a top fighter is free rather than wasting time fighting some poor 2nd or 3rd tier guy that few boxing fans have ever heard of or care about. If Khan waits around long enough, he can probably get a good name for him to fight.

I do think Khan will still fight on May 23rd, but we’re probably talking about Khan fighting someone from this list:

Frankie Gavin
Kevin Bizier
Antonin Decairie
Fredrick Lawson
Chris Van Heerden
Yoshihiro Kamegai
Jeff Horn
Viktor Plotnykov
Dusty Hernandez Harrison
Deniz Ilbay
