A great weekend for the journeyman fighters

By Gav Duthie: I really wish there were more people in boxing like Derric Rossy 30-9 (14) and Carson Jones 37-10-3 (27).  In boxing there are too many who slide by as they add numbers to their record without taking any risks. In no other sport in the world can an individual or team build up an unbeaten reputation without actually facing live opponents. This is where the likes of Rossy and Jones are imperative to expose these pretenders.

The likes of Brian Rose 27-3 (8) should have never got near a title shot with Demetrius Andrade without beating someone like Jones. Derric Rossy on Saturday also ensured that we won’t have to see another unbeaten bum mismatched against a Wilder or Klitschko by stopping him in his tracks before it even gets that far. He defeated previously unbeaten Akhror Muralimov 16-1 (13) with a convincing 10 round decision.

Gatekeeper

It would be good if every division had boxers like these. I struggle to accept them as journeyman. Journeyman are important, they turn up at teo days notice to help save a card. However for me a journeyman loses 90% of their fights. These two are better than that. I think they are gatekeepers to the world level. Of course Jones or Rossy won’t agree that they are gatekeeper fighters. They will feel that these latest wins might earn them their own shot but in reality this probably won’t happen. These fighters are also often on the wrong end of a controversial decision (eg Jones v Brook) (Rossy v Glazkov) namely because promoters don’t see huge value in them winning. In reality these fighters are used to give their prospects a challenge before he steps up another level. All promoters should put there prospects in with these guys early on because it stops wasting everyone’s time both the fighter and promoter. What tends to happen though is these guys are avoided because they don’t want to be embarrassed.

Rossy and Jones future

Eddie Hearn tends to look after his fighters interest and will likely tempt Jones back to the UK for a rematch. Hearn and Matchroom would likely be taking a hit financially as there is no way that Rose could headline again after that performance. However Hearn will likely put it on as an undercard fight like he did after the horrible headline with Bellew-Chilemba. I think he will win again which will retire Rose. Jones feels it is his commitment which has affected him in the past. I think he is as good as anybody in the pocket but his boxing skills are too limited to win a title. Rossy should be looking for a rematch with Glazkov but he won’t get one. He could make a decent career fighting prospects if he wanted but he doesn’t have a good enough chin to do anything significant in the heavyweight division.
