Rigondeaux takes stay busy fight against Hisashi Amagasa on 12/31

rigondeauxBy Allan Fox: With WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (14-0, 9 KOs) unable to get any of the big names at super bantamweight to face him, he’ll instead be taking a stay busy fight against Japan’s Hisashi Amagasa (28-4-2, 19 KOs) in less than two weeks from now on December 31st at the Bodymaker Colosseum, Osaka, in Osaka, Japan.

It’s a simple money fight for Rigondeaux. He’ll be traveling to Amagasa’s home country, even though Rigondeaux is the champion, to face a guy who has done very little during his career.

Amagasa is ranked #10 by the World Boxing Association at featherweight, but he’s someone that will likely be in way, way over his head if he ever fights for a world title in that weight class. Amagasa doesn’t match up with featherweight champions Nicholas Walters, Evgeny Gradovich, Jhonny Gonzalez or Vasyl Lomachenko.

Rigondeaux has pretty much run out of competition at super bantamweight, even though there are a number of fighters that would make for interesting fights against him.

The problem is getting the likes of Carl Frampton, Scott Quigg, Leo Santa Cruz or Chris Avalos to fight him would seem an impossible task. It’s not just the fighters. It’s their promoters. If Rigondeaux can’t get those fighter’s promoters to green light a fight between them and Rigondeaux then those fights will never happen.

Amagasa was beaten four years ago by Ryol Li Lee. He avenged the loss in 2013 by beating Lee by a close 12 round unanimous decision, but it was from an impressive victory for Amagasa. However, he’s won his last 13 fights, albeit against limited opposition, and those victories were enough to get him ranked in the top 10 by the WBA.

Rigondeaux will likely toy with Amagasa for a little while before putting him away with a body shot. Rigondeaux realizes that he needs to be more offensive-minded if he wants to get more attention from the boxing community. It’s not enough that he goes out and pitches a shutout over his opposition. He needs to dominate them and score knockouts.

It was kind of surprising that HBO stopped showing Rigondeaux’s fights on their network after his impressive performances against Nonito Donaire and Joseph Agbeko, because Rigondeaux looked great in those fights. He made two very good fighters look very limited.

If Rigondeaux is going to get any important fights, he’s probably going to need to move up to featherweight because the super bantamweight division has dried up for him. He’s probably not going to be able to get any of the top fighters to ever face him until he’s over-the-hill, and it’s a waste of his career for him to be just fighting obscure contenders over and over again.
