By Jim Dower: At Friday’s weigh-in, challenger Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) came in almost two pounds over the limit at 161.8 pounds for his fight on Saturday night against World Boxing Association (WBA) Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) for their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

For his part, Golovkin weighed in a pound under the limit at 159 pounds. The 34-year-old Rubio stripped down nude in a failed attempt to make the weight, but he still came in over at 161.8lbs.

Rubio now has two hours to take off the weight or else he’ll miss out on his chance to fight for the WBA title. The Golovkin-Rubio fight will still take place, but Rubio just wouldn’t have a chance to win the WBA title.

If Rubio does take the two pounds of weight off, he’s very likely going to be weakened by the process. He may be able to take the weight off, but it’s very likely to cost him the fight. If he doesn’t make weight he’ll likely lose a percentage of his purse, and that’s not a good thing either.

If Rubio had a good chance of winning the fight, he would be better off not trying to lose the last two pounds and instead fight heavy. But the odds are slim that Rubio will win tomorrow night, so he’s better off losing the weight and avoiding the fine for coming in over the limit.

Rubio will probably be okay in the early rounds against Golovkin, but if the fight goes past 6 rounds, Rubio will likely start to wear down from the weight loss.

It’s not surprising that Rubio came in over the limit today because he’s been heavy during the two previous weigh-ins for the 30-day and 7-day weigh-ins for the fight. 30 days away, Rubio was around 15 pounds over the limit.

That weight was probably his natural weight, and that’s a lot of weight to drain down to fight at 160. Rubio would be better off fighting in the super middleweight division in terms of his weight, but the super middleweight division is much better than the middleweight division. Rubio would have a hard time being able to compete against the top fighters in that division.

In the co-feature, WBA Super World featherweight champion Nonito Donaire made weight for his fight against Nicholas Walters. Donaire weighed 125.6 pounds. Walters weighed 125.6lbs.

Other weights on the card:

Edwin Rodriguez 174.8 vs. Azea Augustama 175.8
Marcos Reyes 160.8 vs. Abie Han 160.4
