Groves: No one is talking about Froch-DeGale, they’re talking Froch-Groves

groves0000By Scott Gilfoid: George Groves thinks that the British boxing public are talking more about a third fight between him and IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch rather than a Froch vs. James DeGale fight. Further, Groves believes that the British fans would rather Froch fight another Brit than seeing him fight the likes of Mikkel Kessler or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

“He [Froch] still wants to fight Chavez and Kessler and I think the British public which much rather see him fight another Brit,” Groves said to Skysports.com. “He’s got a mandatory against James DeGale but nobody is talking about that, they’re talking about me and him.”

I haven’t heard too many British fans clamoring for a third fight between Froch and Groves, especially after that less than electrifying win for Groves over EBU super middleweight champion Christopher Rebrasse last Saturday night. That was not a fight that got one excited for a third fight between Froch and Groves.

As far as I can tell, the only one who seems to be interested in a Froch-Groves III fight is Groves himself. He’s the one that started yapping about Froch after his unexciting win over Rebrasse last Saturday. Sky didn’t ask Groves about a third fight against Froch. It was Groves who brought that one up on his own.

Groves thinks that Froch is keeping an eye on him and that’s why he came to his fight last Saturday night. Instead of Groves seeing Froch as doing his job in working for Sky as a commentator last Saturday, Groves believes that Froch is interested in fighting him now.

With the way that Groves is talking, I think he might be a bit deluded about what boxing fans and what Froch are thinking. Judging by the way Froch was talking about Groves last Saturday, I don’t see there being one chance in a million that Froch will throw Groves another bone and agree to fight him.

Froch sounded almost contemptuous when speaking about Groves to the media. Froch flat out said that he’s beaten Groves twice and with 2 wins over him, it’s time to go home rather than continuing to go down the same road in fighting him over and over again.

I don’t know that a fight between Froch and Groves would sell out even a small arena at this point, because the boxing public would like see it as a pathetic money grab on the part of both fighters in just trying to milk the public rather than putting on a fight that is interesting.

“I know I belong at world level and I know I can beat Carl Froch. There’s a demand for a third fight, people are talking about it and asking me about it.”

Groves may be still getting asked about the Froch fight by boxing fans, but I don’t believe that’s because they want to see a third fight between them. I see it as more of a case of the fans asking Groves about it because they don’t know what else to say to Groves. They associate Groves with his two fights against Froch, so of course they’re going to ask Groves about the fight.
