Miguel Cotto ordered to defend WBC title against Golovkin vs. Rubio winner

cotto56678By Cameron Gillon: The WBC have officially ordered that their middleweight champion Miguel Cotto defend his newly won title against the winner of October’s middleweight clash between IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Marco Antonio Rubio.

This is a good call from the WBC as Cotto is not seen as a real middleweight. He won the title off of a injury prone and past his prime Sergio Martinez. Rubio currently holds the WBC interim title which means this title will be on the line in his fight against Golovkin also so if Golovkin wins he will become Cotto’s mandatory challenger for the WBC belt and this will not amuse Miguel Cotto at all.

Cotto and his trainer Freddie Roach have not been vocal about wanting to fight Golovkin since his move up to 160. Cotto hasn’t even mentioned Golovkin’s name, but Roach went to the Golovkin vs. Daniel Geale fight and said he was impressed with Golvokin’s power and ability to cut the ring off from his opponent. But then Roach claimed Golovkin doesn’t have the star power and ability to bring in big pay per view numbers to get the Cotto fight. That’s a ridiculous statement in itself as you can bet a Cotto vs Golovkin fight would bring in some bigger numbers then his last fight with Martinez in June.

Cotto and Roach seem to have theIR head set on the big mega pay day fight against Mexican star Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Canelo has been vocal about wanting to win the 160 WBC strap from Cotto in early 2015, likely in May on the Cinco De Mayo holiday weekend. But this order from the WBC may just ruin those plans. The only way Cotto can face Canelo now is if he vacates his title and leaves Golovkin to face another fighter for the belt and move on to that bigger fight.

Problem with that is Cotto will be seen to of avoided Golovkin and will show that Cotto wants no piece of GGG and that will only make Golovkin look more dangerous than he already is with his incredible power and knockout ratio. I cant see Cotto taking the fight with Golovkin if he beats Rubio.
