Mayweather lacking in quality opponents for next fight on September 13th

floyd666333By Chris Williams: The combination of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s recent wins over Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and Manny Pacquiao extending with Top Rank for another 3 years has effectively cleaned out any worthy opponents for Mayweather to fight for his next bout on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather has 3 fights left of his 6-fight contract with Showtime/CBS, and sadly there’s no one else left that brings anything to the table. The likes of Shawn Porter, Keith Thurman, Kell Brook, Devon Alexander and Amir Khan, which are the best fighters at 147, don’t have the following to bring Mayweather anything. They’re not popular enough for Mayweather to fight yet, and by the time they do become popular, Mayweather will be retired.

The way I see it, Mayweather will need to pick one of the following fighters for his next bout on Showtime PPV if he wants to have someone that can bring bank:

1. Juan Manuel Marquez
2. Gennady Golovkin
3. Peter Quillin

A fight against Golovkin would really give Mayweather a huge boost in cementing his legacy as one of the greatest fighters of all time. If he can face Golovkin and expose the fighter, it would be a huge win for Mayweather and basically give him his crown as the king of boxing. It would be a dangerous fight for Mayweather, to be sure. But the payoff would be tremendous in terms of accolades he would receive for beating Golovkin.

Marquez would be a good option for the sake of having an opponent that can help boost PPV buys. Marquez has been pushing Pacquiao’s PPV numbers for years now in their fights together, and now Mayweather needs to bring Marquez in for a rematch. The two of them would bring in at least 1.4 million buys.

WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia has really hurt his popularity recently with his controversial decision over Mauricio Herrera, and his poor decision to agree to fight 2nd tier fighter Rod Salka on August 9th. With those two fights, I can’t see Mayweather ever agreeing to fight Garcia, because he’s taken his career backwards in a dramatic fashion to the point where he’s not worth fighting any longer. Garcia needs to give Herrera a rematch, and then start fighting quality opposition so that he can earn a shot at Mayweather. His two fights against Erik Morales were sad to watch because it was such a waste.
