ward48By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KO’s) has been nominated by ESPN for the ESPY award for 2014 for his impressive 12 round unanimous decision win over the talented Edwin Rodriguez last November in Ontario, California. Ward totally dominated a very good Rodriguez in besting him by the judges’ scores of 118-106, 117-107, and 116-108 in one of the most impressive performances of his career.

Ward is one of five athletes nominated for the ESPY award. The other candidates are as follows: Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Manny Pacquaio, Jon “Bones” Jones and Ronda Rousey.

Obviously it’s going to be difficult for Ward to beat out the likes of Mayweather because he had two impressive wins over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. Beating Canelo alone may be enough for Mayweather to receive the ESPY award.

“I want to thank ESPN for nominating me in the Best Fighter category. I am in great company with some of the top fighters in the world,” Ward said. “The ESPY experience is something that every athlete would enjoy. I had a great time in 2012 and I’m excited to once again be in a room with some of the world’s best athletes. These are experiences that I don’t take lightly and these moments’ drive me to be the best athlete I can be.”

It would be a big feather in Ward’s cap if he were to capture the ESPY award for his win over Rodriguez. I personally think that Ward’s performance against Rodriguez was more than good enough to win the ESPY award, because Rodriguez is a highly skilled fighter who came into the fight with Ward sporting a record of 24-0, with 16 KO’s. I think Rodriguez would have beaten most of the super middleweights in the division on the night that Ward fought him, including Carl Froch, George Groves and Mikkel Kessler.

The ESPY winners are determined by online voting and fans can cast their ballots through July 16 via this link – h
