By Chris Williams: Earlier today, Paulie Malignaggi (33-5, 7 KO’s) took a shot at Manny Pacquiao after IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (23-0-1, 14 KO’s) bragged about having been his sparring partner in the past. Porter was giving a reason why he felt he’ll beat Malignaggi on April 19th in their fight at the DC Armory, Washington, District of Columbia.
Porter said this as quoted by RingTV: “Sparring with Manny Pacquiao. There’s no better blueprint than that. The guy’s got the quickest hands in the business, so I have all the experience and what it takes to beat Paulie.”
Being a sparring partner for Pacquiao isn’t that big of a deal, and really no way of telling whether Porter will be able to beat Malignaggi are not. Pacquiao has lots of sparring partners, and many of them are just average fighters and not future world champions.
Malignaggi responded back with “I don’t rate Manny Pacquiao as a very good fighter. I don’t rate him as a very intelligent fighter, actually.”
Malignaggi might have a point. Pacquiao is known for his hand speed, power and movement than he is for being an intelligent fighter. Pacquiao is kind of reliant on his trainer Freddie Roach to tell him what to do, and how to go about attacking his opponents. Pacquiao isn’t like Floyd Mayweather Jr., who is able to come up with his own ideas in the ring without having a trainer break it down for him.
What makes Pacquiao look like a less thinking fighter is how Juan Manuel Marquez was able to get the better of him in their four previous fights. Pacquiao’s lack of defense during his career has caused him to take more punishment than other fighters like Mayweather have had to take in the ring. Malignaggi is obviously thinking of how easy Pacquiao is to hit when saying he’s not a good fighter. Malignaggi is someone that likes defensive fighters like Mayweather rather than all-offensive fighters.
