Trout wants Canelo rematch or winner of Cotto-Rodriguez

canelo6By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) is hoping that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) will step up to the plate and agree to give him a rematch so that Trout can clear up the controversy over their fight last April in which Canelo won’t be a questionable decision in El Paso, Texas.

If Trout can’t get a fight against the recently beaten Canelo, then he wants to fight the winner of this Saturday’s fight between Miguel Cotto and Delvin Rodriguez.

Trout has already beaten Rodriguez by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in June of last year, so it’s not likely that Rodriguez will want a second helping of Trout after that experience.

If Rodriguez beats Cotto, it’s almost a sure thing that Cotto will push for an immediate rematch instead of letting Rodriguez walk away with a win.

Trout said to Primera Hora “Definitely, I want a rematch. I want the opportunity to regain the title. I need it. I would like a rematch with Alvarez. If Cotto beats Delvin, it’s also a possibility.”

It’s sad to say but none of these fighters are options for Trout. Canelo will definitely not risk fighting Trout again, not after how bad he looked against Trout last April. Canelo was badly outworked by Trout in 11 of the 12 rounds, and he should have lost the fight by at least 5-6 rounds because he didn’t do enough to get the win over Trout.

Likewise, Trout will never get another fight with Cotto. Trout is really kidding himself if he honestly believes that Cotto will ever risk getting in the ring with him again after what happened to him last December. Cotto should want to get back in the ring with Trout.

After all, Cotto chose to fight Antonio Margarito again after he took a stoppage loss to him in 2008. It’s possible that the decision was an easier one for Cotto because Margarito had been out of the ring for an entire year and was coming off of 3 separate eye surgeries at the times that Cotto fought Margarito again.

That’s not the case with Trout. He’s in great health and he would have to be considered the favorite to beat Cotto again if they were to fight again. That’s why we’ll likely never see Cotto face Trout again.

Trout needs to be a little more realistic with the type of opponents that he wants to fight. He should be gunning for IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina or the recently beaten Ishe Smith.

Those would be good options for him. If he could beat Molina, he’d pick up the IBF t title and he could then resume defending his title against the top contenders in the division.

Trout is probably the 2nd best fighter in the junior middleweight division behind Mayweather. Trout’s problem is he’s not as popular as guys like Canelo and Cotto, because he doesn’t have an entire country behind him the way those fighters do. It makes it harder for Trout to get big fights because of that, which is why he shouldn’t even bother wasting his breath trying to get Canelo or Cotto to face him again.
