Boxing review from the O2

By Dan Henderson: When I arrived at the o2 Arena in London on Saturday I was full off excitement especially after the announcement that Scott Quigg’s world title fight against unbeaten Cuban Yoandris Salinas was added to the bill due to the postponement of the David Haye – Tyson Fury fight and it is this fight where my review will begin.

Scott Quigg retained his WBA ‘regular’ strap after the judges scored the fight a majority draw, I had Quigg winning the fight 115-113 and so did most but I’m not going to try and convince those who haven’t seen the fight that it was bad decision because it was a close one and to be fair it was a pretty even contest.

Salinas started the fight well winning the first three rounds by utilizing a good jab and being the busier fighter, I had Quigg winning rounds four and five as he started to throw better shots but I feel Salinas won rounds six and seven giving him a lead of 68-65 going in to the eighth round. From the eighth round onwards is when Quigg had done his best work going after the body with good crisp hard shots and finding good range when attacking his opponents head with some spiteful hooks, for me Quigg won the remaining five rounds to give him a score of 115-113 but he did leave it a little tight and maybe should have started to go after his opponent sooner but in the end he remains WBA champion.

Kevin Mitchell was in action also after stopping Mexican Marco Lopez in the sixth round. Mitchell completely dominated this fight from start to finish showing a great skill set, I was thoroughly impressed with the way he was putting his shots together and the power that he was showing and if he take that in to his fight with Derry Matthews then he should win convincingly enough.

In what turned to be a highly entertaining fight Wadi Camacho came out the traps stalking his opponent and had put him down in the first round with some crisp power shots and in the second round Conquest had received another count and looked to be all over but what happened next was great entertainment for us at the fight because Conquest showed how big his heart was and came back throwing punches which saw him dominate the rest of the fight to earn the victory and also a crack at the British cruiserweight title.

Other fights on the bill included our two Olympic gold medal winners Anthony Joshua and Luke Campbell both winning by impressive first round stoppages, Lee Selby won the Lonsdale belt outright after beating a game Ryan Walsh via unanimous decision and should see himself step up for the European title where he may face Rendall Munroe. There were also wins for George Michael Carmen and Tony Owens.

All in all I think that it was a good card overall and it was nice to see Joshua make an impressive 1st round TKO win over Emanuele Leo in his debut but I won’t hype him up too much as it’s only his first fight as a pro because we all know what happened last time we hyped up a Gold medal winning heavyweight, we ended up with the A-Farce Audley Harrison so maybe we should allow him to get on with it without putting too much pressure.
