Mayweather fires a salvo at Canelo and De La Hoya at Los Angeles press conference

By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. took off the gloves on Tuesday at the Los Angeles press conference with WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. This press conference was a complete departure for Mayweather because he’d been playing it nice in the other 10 cities on the tour, but he decided to lay into Canelo about him being a star before having proven himself worthy of that status.

However, Mayweather Jr. decided to speak in blunt terms about Canelo, Golden Boy and Oscar De La Hoya. Perhaps it’s just a coincidence, but at the same press conference De La Hoya said “I am convinced Saul “Canelo” Alvarez WILL win on September 14th.”

Mayweather had this to say about De La Hoya, Golden Boy and Canelo: “I can’t speak about Oscar, but I can say this: Richard Schaefer is Golden Boy. I just sit back and think about it at night when I think about certain fighters. They say ‘Mayweather you know you’re facing Canelo,’ but can you tell me 10 world champions that he beat? Just 10, that’s all I ask. You know what; I’ve been sitting on top of the throne for 17 years. Every time they set up a guy, then build them up, you know what I do? [Mayweather then throws a right hand punch in the air]. It’s so crazy that Canelo is such a big star and that he’s not even been on pay per view unless it was on my undercards, but he’s such a big star; He’s such a big star, Oscar. I sit back and go through my mental rolodex and think, you might as well call me the Golden Boy because I already beat everybody on your whole crew last time I checked. I’m young, I’m fly, I’m flashy, I’m rich. Damn, life is good. I’ll see you September 14th.”

If Mayweather beats Canelo as bad as he did Victor Ortiz two years ago, it’s going to take a lot of hot air out of Golden Boy’s “Golden Goose,” Canelo because it’ll take a long time to build him back up to where he is now. Golden Boy has done a good job of building Canelo up by matching him against welterweights and giving him a weight and power advantage, but they might have to keep him on that diet for a little while longer if Mayweather schools him.
