Is there really a need for a Ward-Froch II?

ward45By The Realist: Is there really the need for a second fight between IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) and WBA super middleweight champion Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s)? Of course, the answer is yes.  We all want to see the best Super Middleweights fight.  But, Froch did not earn another shot at S.O.G. after his dismal performance in the first fight.

The only reason the score sheets were so close in the Super Six final was because of the grumbling by a minority of fans  that felt that  Amir Khan did not lose to Lamont Peterson, by the scorecards, in a close fight the week prior to this fight.   Peterson won a close Split Decision in a Fight of the Year candidate.

Directly due to this, the judges in Atlantic City set to make things right, and score the Super Six final battle closer than it was.  Ward had a broken hand, possibly even before the fight, and the pain made it tough for Andre to land power shots late in the fight.  But, all through the fight, Froch had difficulty landing anything substantial.  After the fight, Froch conceded publicly to Ward, knowing that Andre was on a different level.

Aside from the aforementioned events, a rematch would be great fun to watch.  Froch dispatched a reckless Bute rather easily, and seems to have grown wiser and more able with age.  He recently beat Mikkel Kessler in a rematch, fair and square,  but sustained a fair amount of damage, especially in the champion rounds.

Andre Ward beat both Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch, in a way that a great majority of boxing fans can agree upon.  But, Lb. for Lb. and Super Middleweight supreme champion seems available for any of the others.
