Floyd was willing to fight Cotto at 154; what makes Canelo any different?

canelo643By Dominic Sauboorah: WBC Welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO’s) has recently stated how he will only fight Saul Alvarez (43-0 31 KO’s) at the 147 lb. limit and not Alvarez’s natural weight of 154 lb. That’s unlikely to happen, considering that Alvarez is naturally a middleweight so it’d take a lot out of his body if he were to drain down to 147 lb. We’ve seen the effect that’s had on fighters on the past, like Oscar De La Hoya when he fought Manny Pacquiao.

I find this surprising from Floyd, considering that he said before fighting Miguel Cotto how he wanted to fight the “best” Miguel Cotto which he stated was at the super welterweight limit. He criticized Manny Pacquiao for forcing Cotto to drain in weight, yet Floyd’s a hypocrite as he’s asking Canelo to do the same. I don’t understand why when in all reality Floyd will likely beat Alvarez anyway, be that at 147 or 154.

I believe Alvarez needs one or two more big fights before he can go after Mayweather. It’d be an interesting match up but I still believe that he needs to prove himself amongst the elite. In my opinion I can see Floyd winning a UD against Canelo; however will have to deal with some sticky situations in the process. It appears though that Floyd is trying to gain an advantage physically over the naturally bigger Canelo, which I don’t think is right and in the process will likely get criticized for fighting a “weight drained” Alvarez.

I think Floyd should take the fight with Canelo at 154, mainly on the basis that the fans want to see it happen; therefore PPV sales are likely to go through the roof. Also by fighting him at his own weight means that no one can make any criticisms. If Floyd were to ever fight Canelo it should be sooner rather than later because the longer Floyd leaves him be the more confident the Mexican’s going to become by beating other guys. Canelo is an extremely talented fighter considering his age; however I believe that he hasn’t got the lateral foot movement to deal with a defensive genius like Mayweather. Nevertheless the Mexican’s power could play a big part in the fight if it is to happen.
