Dibella: Macklin has good chance of beating Golovkin

macklin444By Scott Gilfoid: Lou Dibella, the promoter for Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s), thinks he has a great chance of beating unbeaten WBA World middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) in their fight on June 29th at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

Dibella said to RingTV “I believe my guy [Macklin] has an excellent chance of winning this fight. This is the biggest fight of Golovkin’s career. [Gabriel] Rosado had some success against ‘GGG’ by pushing him backwards. Macklin is a whole lot bigger and stronger than Rosado.”

Actually, Macklin, 5’10”, is two inches shorter than Rosado and is about the same in terms of power. The difference between Rosado and Macklin is minimal. They’re both guys that are gatekeeper type fighters that do well against guys like Joachim Alcine, but then fail when they step it up a level.

Rosado didn’t have any success against Golovkin aside from the 5th round when he suddenly stopped running from him and tried to actually fight. Golovkin, who had been chasing Rosado around the ring for the first four rounds, seemed surprised at Rosado’s change of tactics and he ate a few shots in that round. However, it was a costly round for Rosado because he was cut up in trying to fight Golovkin toe-to-toe.

In the next round, Golovkin got serious with Rosado had badly hurt him with a right uppercut at the start of the round. It wasn’t competitive in that round and Rosado ran until the fight was halted in the 7th.

Macklin doesn’t stand a chance in this fight against Golovkin and he can ape what Rosado did all he wants, but if he does that he’s going to end up on his backside real quick. I mean, I’m hoping Macklin does try and use what Rosado did as a blueprint in how to beat Golovkin because the fight will be over within three rounds, but I don’t think it’s a smart move if you’re Macklin.

Macklin doesn’t have the power or the chin to trade with Golovkin and he’ll just be another statistic. If I’m Dibella, I’d be on my knees pleading with Macklin to stay away from any exchanges with Golovkin so that he doesn’t get brained early.

The only hope Macklin has of winning is if he can run until late in the fight and then reverse course and make it a last stand in the 11th or 12th rounds. It’s possible that Golovkin might be too tired by then to knock him into oblivion.

You have to remember that Golovkin has been knocking a lot of his opponents early, so if Macklin can run until late in the fight, he could have some success if he turns around and goes all out in the last two rounds. I don’t see it happening, but it’s the only chance Macklin has and it would be my advice to him if I were his promoter. Dibella’s advice will only get Macklin knocked out fast.
