Golovkin wants Saul Alvarez next after the Rosado fight

golovkin5By Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) is willing to fight WBC light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) after Golovkin knocks out his next opponent Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) on January 19th on HBO at Madison Square Garden in New York.

In addition to Canelo, Golovkin also wants Mikkel Kessler, Sergio Martinez, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Andre Ward.

When asked by RingTV if he would be interested in fighting Canelo, Golovkin said “Why not? I want Canelo and Sergio Martinez. I want drama.”

A fight between Golovkin and Alvarez would be an interesting one because it would mark one of the few occasions where Alvarez would be fighting someone around the same size as him. Golovkin is just a little taller than the 5’9” Canelo at 5’10” and there are rumors that Golovkin really punished Canelo during a sparring session not too long again.

I don’t know if Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions would let the young 22-year-old Canelo fight Golovkin, however. They’ve been putting Canelo with less than dangerous welterweights and in one case a light welterweight, and it would be a huge shock for Canelo to all of a sudden be matched against a guy his own size but with better punching power, speed, boxing skills and experience. Alvarez has more experience at the pro level but Golovkin, a former 2004 Olympic silver medalist for Kazakhstan, has by far much more amateur experience under his belt.

Canelo would have a lot of problems with Golovkin’s power and stamina. He’s not someone that will wear down by the 6th round, and In think Golovkin would take Canelo deep into the fight and drown him if Golovkin Boy were to let Canelo take the fight with the dangerous Golovkin. But it’s pretty obvious that he won’t be allowed to take this fight because they seem to be matching Alvarez against a certain type of fighters – read: smaller and older – and they’re not going to all of a sudden want to put Canelo in with anyone who is actually a good fighter like Golovkin.
