Froch vs. Kessler 2 will be a massive fight

froch454By Thomas Cowan: After yesterday’s announcement by Eddie Hearn, promoter to Carl Froch, that the highly anticipated Brit’s rematch with Mikkel Kessler will be a pay-per-view fight there has been a certain amount of sniggering. Why would people want to pay to see to fighters nearing the end of their careers who have both been dominated by American Andre Ward?

Is a fight between two “Ward losers” going to sell out in the 17,000 capacity 02 arena in London? Frankly, both these questions are ludicrous.

Firstly, the main reason this fight will be a sell out wherever the fight takes place as well as getting thousands of PPV viewers is that the first fight was an epic war. Both warriors went toe-to-toe for 12 rounds of breathtaking action. There was no running away, no time-wasting holding on and endless jabbing to try and bore their way to a decision win. The Brit and the Dane both went for knockout and the fight was by far the most entertaining contest of the otherwise dreary, drawn-out Super Six. Fans will pay to see two great fighters engage in war even if they aren’t the best in the division.

The best evidence of this is the David Haye vs Chisora fight last year. This was a contest between two “Klitschko losers” who didn’t even hold world titles but 30,000 fans eagerly filed in to Upton Park to see the fight because they knew it would be a war. Thousands more paid £10 to watch it on Boxnation.

In my opinion Froch and Kessler are at a higher level than those two, especially Chisora and this is an IBF/WBA unification bout not a non-title fight. For these reason, Froch-Kessler 2 will be a huge PPV attraction and a guaranteed sell-out at the 02 or the 19,000 capacity arena at the MEN arena in Manchester and it is insulting to both men to say otherwise. I even think it could fill the City Ground, the home of Froch’s beloved Nottingham Forest where Froch has always dreamed of fighting but I think fighting in an outdoor arena in May is too risky because of the risk of a downpour.

Whatever the venue, I will be looking forward to this fight and will be looking to get a ticket or pay to watch it Sky Box Office, I’m sure thousands of Brits, and Danes will be doing the same.
