Image: Weigh-in: Froch vs. Mack, Bellew vs. BolontiBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) easily made weight today in his weigh-in with American Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) for their fight on Saturday night in Nottingham, UK. Froch, 35, came in at a half pound under the limit at 167 ½ lbs, whereas the 32-year-old Mack weighed in right on the limit of 168 lbs

Mack was picked out from the light heavyweight division for this fight, meaning he had to boil down from 175 to make weight. Some boxing fans feel that this was done to get an edge for Froch, because this could potentially be a lot easier fight for him than it would if Froch fought an actual contender from the super middleweight class that is used to fighting at this weight.

On the undercard, light heavyweight Tony Bellew (18-1, 12 KO’s) weighed in at 174 ¾ lbs for his fight for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Light Heavyweight title against contender Roberto Bolonti (30-1, 19 KO’s). For his part, Bolonti weighed in at 173 lbs.

Despite being ranked #5 WBC, #10 IBF, Bolonti is thought by a lot of boxing fans to be a step down from Bellew’s last opponent journeyman Edison Miranda in talent. The reason why people feel this way is that Bolonti doesn’t look very impressive and he’s never really fought anyone that you could call a real good fighter. Bolonti has spent the majority of his boxing career fighting in Argentina against local opposition from that country.

The winner of the Bellew-Bolonti clash could find himself fighting for the title against WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson next year. While I think Bolonti and Bellew are both fine bottom level/2nd tier type fighters, I don’t see either of them being ready to face a talent like Dawson. Never mind Dawson’s one-sided loss to WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward, he’s still WAY, WAY above the likes of Bellew and Bolonti. Those guys are better off facing some of the other contenders so we can have a legitimate opponent to fight Dawson for his WBC crown next year. It wouldn’t be sporting to throw the winner of the Bellew vs. Bolonti fight in there with Dawson because neither of them are ready – and I don’t think they ever will.
