Image: Berto okay after hospital checkupBy Allan Fox: Andre Berto 28-2, 22 KO’s) made a brief visit to the Loma Linda medical center to get checked out after his loss to Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night to get a CAT scan and to be checked out for bruising of both of his eyes. However, Berto was only there for two hours and he was then allowed to go after nothing serious was found wrong with him, according to RingTV.

Other than Berto’s eyes, he really didn’t take a lot of punishment from Guerrero. The shots that Berto was getting hit with weren’t really powerful shots, but they did damage to his eyes because there were so many of them. Berto’s left eye closed in the 2nd round after he was thumbed by a left hand from Guerrero. That got Berto off to a really bad start because he was concerned about the eye, and he wasn’t really able to focus. You could see that he was in a lot of pain.

From the 2nd round, Guerrero was able to push Berto up against the ropes and keep him there for prolonged periods of time. Although Guerrero landed some body shots, they weren’t powerful punches, and neither were Guerrero’s shots to the head. Berto was landing the much harder punches, but he wasn’t throwing nearly as many as Guerrero.

That was Berto’s main problem. He wasn’t letting his hands go nearly enough, and it led to him being outworked in a winnable fight. Berto was still in position to win the fight despite being knocked down in the 1st and 2nd rounds. However, by not throwing enough punches in rounds 3 through 12, Berto gave the fight away.

This loss really hurt Berto in more ways than one, because it was the second time that he was on the verge of a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr, and he blew it both times by losing. Last year, Berto fought Victor Ortiz, and had he won that fight he would been matched against Mayweather. Unfortunately, Ortiz outworked Berto over the course of the fight and took advantage of Berto’s stamina problems in the second half of the fight. Ortiz then moved on and got a big money fight against Mayweather.
