This was a mismatch before the fight even started, and few people saw it anything other than that.

With one old codger down the drain, Price is now being matched against another older fighter, this one 45-year-old Matt Skelton (28-6, 23 KO’s). Price’s promoter Frank Maloney has reportedly announced that Skelton will be Price’s next fight. This was all set up really well, as Skelton just happened to have fought on the Price-Harrison undercard tonight beating Croatian heavyweight Jakov Gospic (11-5, 9 KO’s) by a 2nd round TKO.

Price knocked out Harrison after hurting him with a range finding right hand that looked a lot like a prodding jab. Price then opened up with a storm of shots with Harrison feebly trying to cover up on the ropes. It ended with Harrison going down from a right hand while the referee was in the process of halting the fight.

Price’s promoter Maloney called out Tyson Fury after the fight, but no one really expected Fury to accept the offer because he’s trying to get a fight with former WBA World heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev, who has a #3 WBA ranking. Fury wants this fight because he feels it will give him more credibility because of Chagaev’s high ranking and his status as a former champion. Price isn’t ranked in the top 15, so it’s not as an appealing fight for Fury. However, at the end of the day the bigger money fight for Fury is against Price, not Chagaev. Fury, #5 WBC, #8 WBO, really doesn’t need to fight Chagaev in order to get a title shot because the Klitschkos have already shown interest in fighting Fury, but he hasn’t been in a hurry to take the fights.

As such, fighting Chagaev isn’t really needed for Fury to get a title shot, because he’s going to get one anyway as soon as he’s interested in making that jump. The money is better against Price for sure, but don’t hold your breath waiting for that fight to happen because it’s not going to. And with Maloney already selecting 45-year-old Skelton for Price to fight on December 8th in the UK, it doesn’t look as if he’s all that interested in the Fury fight for Price as well.

I wonder when Price will finally step it up against quality opposition? He’s 29 now, and soon he’ll be 30. That’s kind of ancient for fighters still facing 2nd tier opposition.
