Stevenson-George to be rescheduled for October

By Dan Ambrose: The IBF super middleweight eliminator bout that was supposed to take place this Friday night between #2 IBF Adonis Stevenson and #11 Don George will be rescheduled for October some time, according to RingTV. This comes after the 34-year-old Stevenson suffered a hand injury while sparring recently.

George will likely still fight on this Friday’s ESPN2 fight card, but it will be on the undercard instead of the main event and his opponent will likely be a much lesser fighter than Stevenson. If George can get through this fight then he’ll likely meet up with Stevenson in October to fight in the IBF eliminator bout. Provided that Stevenson doesn’t re-injure his hand or suffer any other injuries, the winner of the Stevenson-George fight will become the mandatory challenger for IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch.

However, that fight won’t likely take place until late next year if at all, because Froch has already got plans on fighting former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute early next year, and then he wants to fight a rematch against Mikkel Kessler in his fight after that.

George, 27, is coming off of a one-sided loss to unbeaten super middleweight contender Edwin Rodriguez last March. George looked awful in that fight, and it’s hard to imagine that he’s being allowed to fight for the IBF mandatory spot given how poor he looked in that fight.

Stevenson has been knocking all of his opponents out early as of late, but he’s still never faced a quality opponent despite having been a pro since 2006. Stevenson may fall apart once he fights someone good for a change and get stopped like he was in the 2nd round against journeyman Darnell Boone in 2010.
