Khan still not saying if he’ll be dumping Roach

Image: Khan still not saying if he'll be dumping RoachBy William Mackay: Despite having said last week that he’d be making a decision in a week about whether to stay with his current trainer Freddie Roach or dump him and go with another big named opponent that can spend more time with him working on his many flaws in his game, most notably with his defensive lapses.

Khan had said recently that he’d been approached by legendary trainer Emanuel Steward about taking over the training for him. However, Steward shot that idea down completely earlier today in an interview at examiner.com, saying he never approached Khan about wanting the trainer job. What’s the real story behind this is anyone’s guess. I don’t know why Khan would make up a story up a story like that if what Steward says is true, because there would be too many chances of Steward hearing about it and refuting what was said. I don’t know who to believe to tell you the truth.

Khan does need to make a big decision about whether to stick it out with Roach or not because it’s pretty clear that things aren’t working out with Roach anymore. Roach may have been the perfect trainer for Khan after he’d been knocked out by Breidis Prescott, because Roach was able to teach Khan a few things and help him beat some beatable fighters. Khan seemed to get a surge of self confidence initially when working with Roach. Khan had one close call in his fight with Marcos Maidana, but other than that one hard fight, Khan sliced through his competition with Roach’s help. Things fell apart for Khan, however, in his last two fights against pressure fighters Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, losing both fights and looking unskilled at times.

Khan looked like he didn’t have a clue what to do and he was forced to run around he ring at least against Peterson. Against Garcia, it just looked like Khan didn’t have a lot of respect for him and was looking to try and knock him out. I thought to myself that Garcia’s father’s comments about Khan really got to him and made him mad enough to get out of his game plan and try to slug it out. If that’s the case then Khan should have known better.

If Khan does boot Roach he needs to try and get one of these trainers to take over:

Floyd Mayweather Sr
Roger Mayweather
Pernell Whitaker

One of those guys would be perfect for Khan because they would teach him some defense and help protect his chin a little better. Whitake’s good for teaching guys head movement and how to use their upper bodies to keep from getting hit. The Mayweather’s are good at teaching Khan how to stand and defend with the shoulder roll.
