Image: Joshua defeats Dychko by controversial decision; Cammarelle beats MedzhidovBy Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s super heavyweight Anthony Joshua will be meeting former 2008 Italian Super heavyweight Olympic gold medalist Roberto Cammarelle in the finals of the Olympic competition to fight for the gold medal after both Joshua and Cammarelle came out on top in their semi-finals matches.

Joshua defeated Kazakhstan’s Ivan Dychko by a 13-11 score. The scoring for the fight was very odd with the judges scoring both the 1st and 2nd rounds even despite Dychko clearly getting the better of the slow moving arm punching Joshua.

In the 3rd round, Joshua did look slightly better than Dychko, blooding his nose and scoring a few more times in the round. Joshua definitely did the better work in the 3rd but not by a huge margin. I had Dychko comfortably ahead by the score of 16-8 going into the 3rd round and Joshua didn’t do nearly enough to come from behind to get the win.

This was just another controversial win for Joshua I hate to say. I had Joshua losing in his first fight in the Olympic competition against Cuban Erislandy Savon, so the fact that Joshua was even in the semi-finals was a minor miracle. But then to have him win another controversial decision, that just puts me off. I feel really sorry for Dychko, because this 21-year-old talent deserved the win and now the Vitali Klitschko look alike will have to go home with nothing to show for it. How sad.

In the other semi-finals bout, Italian Roberto Cammarelle showed good power and accurate combinations to beat Magomedrasul Medzhidov by a 13-12 score. Cammarelle had problems with Medzhidov’s powerful shots in the 1st round, trailing 6-4. However, Cammarelle came back in the 2nd with big power shots to even the score at 10-10 going into the 3rd and final round. Cammarelle got the better of Medzhidov in 3rd by a slight margin to seal the victory.

Cammarelle and Joshua will now meet in the finals for the Gold medal on Sunday. Cammarelle lost to Joshua by a close decision in the 2011 World Amateur Boxing Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan. I thought Cammarelle did more than enough to deserve a victory in that fight.

Cammarelle should be able to get by Joshua to win the gold medal with no problems. Cammarelle is the harder puncher, throws the better combinations and is a lot more fluid compared to the stiff, arm-punching Joshua. Whether Cammarelle will be given the decision is another thing.
