By Dan Ambrose: Team Cotto are looking at matching Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) against either WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (29-0, 12 KO’s) for WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO’s) next on December 1st at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Bryan Perez, Cotto’s close friend who works for him at Miguel Cotto Promotions, said to Primerahora.com “There are several possibilities in the environment and Miguel is enjoying a great time in his career. Alvarez has been named as has Tim Bradley.”
There it is. It’s down to Canelo Alvarez and Bradley. Bradley, 5’6″, would be the perfect opponent for the 5’7″ Cotto, because he can’t punch and would be giving away a lot of size. The only ting that would potentially get in the way of a Cotto-Bradley fight is if Manny Pacquiao elects to fight a rematch against Bradley on November 10th to try and recapture his WBO welterweight title that he lost last June.
Bradley will take the Pacquiao rematch over a fight with Cotto any day of the week, because the money will be so much better in that fight than it would be for a Cotto bout. At the same time, Pacquiao is probably an easier match-up for Bradley, because Pacquiao can’t handle movement as well as Cotto. Bradley’s movement won’t work nearly as well against Cotto, because he’s good at cutting off the ring.
Cotto will have problems against the 5’9″ Alvarez, because he’s got heavy hands and good boxing skills. If a fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr. had enough power to have Cotto effectively out on his feet in the 12th round of their bout last May, then Alvarez will be able to drop Cotto to his knees to get a KO.
Cotto needs to think before he takes that fight, because he’ll lose it badly if he does take that fight. He’ll get a good payday, but then ruin his chances in getting a rematch against Mayweather by getting knocked out. Mayweather probably won’t won’t want to fight Cotto again if he takes another loss.
