Roach doesn’t want to see another Pacquiao-Marquez fight

Image: Roach doesn't want to see another Pacquiao-Marquez fightBy Chris Williams: Trainer Freddie Roach has seen enough of his fighter Manny Pacquiao struggle to beat Juan Manuel Marquez, and he prefers that they never fight again for some reason. Pacquiao and Marquez have three times with Pacquiao winning two of the fights by controversial decision and then fighting to an equally controversial 12 round draw.

Many boxing fans feel that Marquez should have been given the decisions in all three fights, but that he lost likely because he’s not as big a draw as the Filipino fighter.

Roach told the boxing channel via ABS-CBN News “I think every time they fight each other, it’s less entertaining. They know each other so well. Three times is enough for me.”

I have a feeling that Roach may be experiencing some fear of seeing Pacquiao get beaten, and that in turn would make Roach look bad because he’s his trainer. The reason they’re not as entertaining now is simple – Pacquiao is getting older, and can’t jump around like he used to when he was younger. Instead of jumping around like a frog, he stumbles and shuffles like a fighter that has lost his legs. Pacquiao basically walks around the ring like a heavyweight rather than a welterweight. He was beaten in his last fight against Tim Bradley, and had that been Marquez that was in the ring with him, Pacquiao likely would have been really beaten up and exposed.

It would be interesting to know who Roach wants Pacquiao to fight now. He seems cool to the idea of Pacquiao facing Bradley again. Incredibly, one fighter that Roach would like to see Pacquiao face is former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios. Roach would love to see a Rios-Pacquiao fight. It’s perhaps the biggest joke fight I can think of, because Rios was just badly exposed by Richard Abril, yet escaped from that fight with a controversial 12 round decision that reminded me of the three previous Pacquiao-Marquez fights.
