Image: Broner could replace Mayweather and Pacquiao in a year or twoBy Scott Gilfoid: Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) is quickly becoming a household name after making light work of Vincente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KO’s) in a 5th round stoppage on Saturday night in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Broner’s body work was out of this world, and he did a number on Escobedo when he trapped him in the fifth round after tagging him with some really heavy shots that hurt him. I don’t like the way that Escobedo’s corner threw in the towel so quickly, because it made the fight look somehow staged. Broner deserved to finish off the hurt Escobedo, but that opportunity was taken from him by Escobedo’s corner when he threw in the towel.

I had a feeling going into this fight that when things started going badly for Escobedo, his corner would pull the plug on him quickly rather than let him soak up punishment. Escobedo’s corner might have been acting quickly because Escobedo was the smaller man, but really he was only five pounds lighter than Broner at 142 lbs compared to the 147 pound Broner. That’s not very significant.

With this win the 22-year-old Broner mentioned wanting to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, Antonio DeMarco and Brandon Rios next. That’s probably not going to happen, because Marquez is fighting at light welterweight, and the other two guys won’t be easy to fight either. Rios can’t even make lightweight anymore, so that would be a waste of time unless it was a catchweight fight.

Broner is now ready to take over for the fading stars Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao when they retire from the sport in a year or two. Those guys won’t be around too much longer, and Broner, 22, is just now starting to get his career moving at full speed.
