The Time Is Now For Malignaggi

Image: The Time Is Now For MalignaggiBy Mark Uliano: Today on Twitter, WBA Welterweight champion Paulie ‘Magic Man’ Malignaggi went off on the newly crowned WBO titleholder, Timothy Bradley, for a chance at fighting Bradley in the near future. With the majority of the top Welterweight contenders busy in the coming months, a Bradley-Malignaggi unification clash would seem like the smart thing to do.

Will Top Rank put their new champion in the ring with the seasoned Golden Boy Promotions fighter, or will Bob Arum stick Bradley in the ring with another Top Rank stable mate?

Malignaggi (31-4, 7KO), coming off one of the most impressive fights of his career against Vyacheslav Senchenko this past April, is said to be fighting next at the new Barclays Center in Paulie’s hometown of Brooklyn, NY. Golden Boy wanted to start their promotional pact with the Brooklyn arena with a bang, making their first show a PPV caliber card. A rematch with Manny Pacquiao doesn’t seem to be in the works and with IBF titleholder Randal Bailey signed to fight Devon Alexander on September 8th and Jr. Welterweight champions Danny Garcia and Amir Khan fighting each other in July, Bradley doesn’t seem to have to look far or have many choices for his next opponent. The ‘Magic Man’ known for his outgoing style and savvy boxing skills, has been adamant on the social media outlet Twitter, that he wants the unification bout with Bradley. With loses against the likes of Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton, the Brooklyn native has definitely been in the ring with the better opposition. Malignaggi, spending the majority of his career at Jr. Welterweight, seems to be more comfortable at his new weight, winning four straight fights with two by knockout since moving up from 140 pounds.

Joel Diaz, Bradley’s head trainer, was reported saying during an interview with Elie Seckbach that a Malignaggi-Bradley fight would be an easy fight for Bradley(29-0, 12KO). After watching Bradley’s last fight against Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao and Malignaggi’s domination over Senchenko, I agree that it would be an easy fight but not for the man trained by Diaz. With Bradley’s last stoppage coming against 40-year old Joel Casamayor last year, Bradley recently had trouble hitting and hurting a slowed down Manny Pacquiao. Malignaggi uses the ring to his advantage with great footwork and blinding speed, although not known for his power it seems that he has gotten stronger since he’s moved to Welterweight. I believe Bradley would have trouble with Malignaggi’s speed being a victim to the saying, “You can’t hit what you can’t catch.” I honestly see Diaz saying it would be an easy fight instead of him saying it’s a dangerous fight, which it would be for Bradley after controversially winning his WBO strap. Unfortunately for boxing fans, I see Arum putting Bradley in the ring with a soft opponent for his next fight to get Bradley’s confidence back up to where it was before the Pacquiao fight. A fight with the Guerrero-Aydin winner is possible at the end of the year but that would be another Golden Boy-Top Rank promotional clash that doesn’t seem to be likely, especially since Golden Boy has said the winner of that fight will be the front runner for a fight with Floyd Mayweather and his WBC title.

Although Bob Arum has done business with Paulie Malignaggi in the past when he fought with Lou DiBella Entertainment, I don’t see him putting Bradley in the ring with him now that he’s signed on with Golden Promotions. In my opinion, I see the fight as a one sided beat down with Malignaggi stopping Bradley in the late rounds like he did to Senchenko in April. Bradley seems more like a new found hype-job than a real threat to any of the top fighters in the Welterweight division. I hope for the sake of boxing that this fight gets made. Malignaggi always aims to impress and puts on a great show, whether win or loss, all for his huge fan following.
