Image: Marquez will have to chase down Fedchenko to beat himBy Allan Fox: If three time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KO’s) wants to improve his chances of success against Serhiy Fedchenko (30-1, 13 KO’s) in their fight two weeks from now on April 14th for the interim WBO light welterweight title then the 38-year-old Marquez will plan on taking the fight to Fedchenko to make sure he gets the decision. Marquez and Fedchenko will be fighting at the New Mexico City Arena in Mexico City, Mexico.

Marquez’s counter punching style of fighting won’t exactly jell with the timid hit and run of fighting that the the 30-year-old Ukrainian Fedchenko typically uses in his fights. Fedchenko is the complete opposite of Manny Pacquiao, the last fighter that Marquez met in the ring.

Pacquiao did all the hard work for Marquez by coming forward most of the fight to create numerous opportunities for Marquez to land his counter punches. However, that’s not going to happen with Fedchenko because he doesn’t really come forward much other than to land probing jabs or quick left hooks or right hands before scampering away.

Marquez bulked up a lot of his last fight in November against Pacquiao at welterweight. However, Marquez is going to need to think in terms of speed for this fight because Fedchenko seems to lean backwards when throwing shots and he’s always ready to retreat around the ring if his opponent comes after him and is good at landing shots while moving. His entire career he’s found success in this style, especially against fighters that come at him with good offensive skills. Marquez isn’t a really good pressure fighter and it’s going to be hard for him against a defensive guy like Fedchenko.
