Image: Chisora: I'm not afraid of old man Vitali; his old legs won't keep upBy Allan Fox: This Saturday night British heavyweight Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9 KO’s) will be fighting for a world title for the first time in his five-year pro career against 6’7″ World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) at the Olympiahalle, in Munich, Bayern, Germany.

Chisora told thesun.co.uk “I’m not like any of the other challengers that bow down. They don’t know what to expect. It scares them. Why should I be afraid of an old man? It will be 100 miles an hour and his old legs won’t be able to keep up.”

Chisora is really into not giving respect to Vitali and seems to equate not giving respect as something that will give him a mental edge in the ring on Saturday night. While I do agree that you can sometimes intimidate an opponent enough to get an edge in a fight, but not when you don’t have much talent to go along with the false front. Chisora is heaped to the ceiling in mind games but short of the talent needed to take advantage of it.

In that respect, Chisora is almost identical to the mind games playing fellow British heavyweight David Haye, who made it a point to try and psyche Vitali’s brother IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko out in the weeks before their fight last July. However, when Haye got into the ring, he didn’t have the talent, size or the courage to make good on all the mental gymnastics he had been playing. Now it’s Chisora’s turn but it’s even more laudable because he doesn’t have Haye’s speed, power or skills and he’s facing a guy that is almost impossible to knock out in Vitali.

Chisora plans on using his legs but he doesn’t really do a lot of circular movement, so his movement will be kind of irrelevant. Chisora fights in straight lines, either going straight at his opponents to fire off shots or backing up straight back when he tastes some power that he doesn’t like. I expect Chisora to do a lot of backwards retreating in this fight on Saturday until he runs out of real estate and finds himself with his back against the ropes. Chisora will be a sitting duck at that point an will end up taking punishment until he’s knocked out in a one-sided fight.
