Image: Peterson doesn't know Mystery manBy William Mackay: IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) doesn’t have the foggiest idea who the mystery man is from his fight with Amir Khan last December and has never me the man before. Khan and Golden Boy Promotions are using the mystery man as evidence that Peterson’s win is suspect and should overturned to a no contest due to the mystery man sitting alongside the WBA supervisor Michael Welsh during the Khan-Peterson fight.

According to RingTV, Peterson’s publicist Andre Johnson said this about the mystery man: “We don’t even know the guy. The gentleman that they’re speaking about has no direct affiliation with us. To speak to the issue of the guy congratulating Lamont Peterson in the ring. I mean, people stormed the ring after the right was over.”

Johnson is 100 percent correct. Just because some guy came into the ring after the fight to join for the celebration, that doesn’t mean that he’s connected in any way with Peterson. You can try and draw line but you’d be speculating and that wouldn’t be fair to Peterson. The mystery didn’t change the judges’ scores and merely sat and chatted with the WBA supervisor. There is hardly enough evidence to overturn the result of the fight based on that thing.

Khan and his promoter Richard Schaefer are looking to have Khan’s loss taken away and the fight result changed to a no contest so that he can have his titles back. It would quite sad if Khan gets his way and even sadder if he immediately moves on to the welterweight division following that. I don’t know why he’d even want the titles back if he plans on moving up in weight anyway. It’s hard even necessary, but think this is all about creating doubt about Peterson’s win so that Golden Boy can continue to push Khan as a future mega star in the sport.

Right now, Khan’s chances of being a future mega start are quite low based not only on the loss but how poorly he fought against Peterson. That wasn’t a Floyd Mayweather-esque or Manny Pacquiao-eque performance we saw from Khan. It looked like a novice fighter pushed out against someone that he wasn’t ready for in terms of technical skills. Khan needs some major help with his skillset and probably would be better off getting a new trainer or one that can put him in with enough good sparring partners for him to learn how to fight without fouling or running around the ring all night like a clumsy bird.
