If Khan can get his loss switched to a ‘no-contest’ this will mean a lot more money for him for a Peterson rematch

Image: If Khan can get his loss switched to a 'no-contest' this will mean a lot more money for him for a Peterson rematchBy William Mackay: Amir Khan and his promoters at Golden Boy are really hoping that he can get his loss to Lamont Peterson overturned and ruled a ‘no contest’ by the IBF and WBA sanctioning bodies. Besides being able to then fight Peterson at their leisure, it will also enable Khan to keep his IBF and WBA titles and thus get a much bigger payday as the champion in a rematch with Peterson.

It’s pretty much academic anyway that they’re going to be fighting soon anyway regardless of whether the WBA and IBF force the issue but if they change the result by overturning it due all of the various complaints that Khan’s powerful promotional company has put up, it’s going to mean a lot more money for Khan because he’ll the champion again and Peterson just the challenger.

Peterson was offered a $1 million to fight Khan again by Golden Boy, but if the results are overturned, then Peterson will likely be lucky to make even $800,000. Needless to say, it’ll be a raw deal for Peterson if they take the titles away from based on the petty complaints that Khan’s team has put up.

Here’s basically what the complaints are:

• The mystery man sitting down next to WBA supervisor Michael Welsh and talking to him during the fight: The man may have lifted up a scorecard but he was not a part of Peterson’s team and he never spoke to any of the actual judges. He was just a person that boldly walked up and sat down next to the supervisor.

• Khan being penalized two points for constant pushing off on Peterson: Khan and Golden Boy feel that pushing isn’t a foul that should lead to points being taken off.

• The judges scoring: One of the judges crossed out a score during one of the rounds in which Khan was penalized. It looked like a harmless mistake of the judge being confused and there’s nothing there that proves anything other than the judge made a mistake and forgot about the point deduction from Khan.

I’m sorry but there’s nothing there that is serious enough for the fight result to be overturned. I mean maybe a rematch being ordered is something that’s understandable given the circumstances but to take away Peterson’s win over that mess? That’s just wrong and it will stink to the high heavens if that’s what the two sanctioning bodies end up doing on January 18th when they make their decision. Golden Boy paid a lot of money for this appeal and it’s going to be tough on Peterson because they threw some serious bread at the two sanctioning bodies to have this thing investigated. But it’s going to make things look even worse if they take the man’s win away from him. Like I said, I think it’s reasonable to have a rematch ordered because the fight was close enough to require a rematch but not to overturn the results. That would look like Peterson is getting pushed around by a more popular fighter backed by a huge promotional company.
