Groves faces Anderson on 3/16, wants Froch next year

Image: Groves faces Anderson on 3/16, wants Froch next yearBy Scott Gilfoid: British super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) is targeting former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KO’s) in 2013 if Groves can get past his retread opponent Kenny Anderson (15-1, 11 KO’s) in their pointless rematch on March 16th at the Wembley Arena, London, UK and whichever likely domestic level opponents comes after that.

Groves, 23, sees a win over the 29-year-old Anderson as a given and is already looking at facing someone better like Froch in his next bout. That’s obviously not going to happen because Froch isn’t going to waste time on a guy like Groves who’s wasting time fighting domestic level fighters for a second time after already knocking them out previously.

It’s like staying in the second grade twice just to see if you can do better a second time. Talk about dumb. Froch won’t waste his precious time on someone who is going backwards with their career like Groves instead of in forward motion. Not sure if it was Groves’ brilliant idea to fight Anderson again but if it wasn’t, he should stood up and said no to that.

Why face a guy again like Anderson when you just knocked him out in the 6th round in November 2010? And Groves wants to go from that needless domestic level fight to a fight against a world class fighter like Froch? Is there something wrong with this picture? I guess Froch out of mercy for Groves should give him the fight, right? I have a suggestion for Groves: How about forgetting about beating all the guys you already beat and shuck the worthless British strap and go after some actual world class contenders. Maybe then someone like Froch will listen to you when you ask for a fight.

Froch would beat Groves if they fought and he would get zero credit for having done so. Beating a guy with no experience against world class opposition isn’t considered a big deal in the boxing world. It would be like beating an old guy. You get nothing from it.

Groves told the BBC “One of the biggest fights in a year’s time would be me and Carl with a world title on the line. The styles gel and we’re both always in exciting fights. That would be a great British match.”

Froch and Groves don’t have styles that gel, like Groves says. Groves likes to run around the ring using a lot of the same head feints that David Haye does. He’s pretty much a spoiler type that can capitalize against weaker-chinned opposition.

I think Groves needs to fight a rematch against James DeGale, who he beat by a controversial decision last year in May. I had DeGale winning that fight by at least two rounds, but Groves wants nothing to do with a rematch with DeGale. I’m not surprised because Groves was losing the exchanged and had to run like mad in the second half of the fight. DeGale was clearly the stronger fighter in the last six rounds and he showed that he’s a cut above Groves.
