Image: Donaire-Vazquez: Nonito in test for vacant WBO super bantamweight title on 2/4By Dan Ambrose: Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KO’s) is seen by many of his boxing fans to be the next Manny Pacquiao and following in his footsteps in winning titles in multiple divisions.

So far, the 29-year-old Donaire has captured world title belts in two separate divisions – flyweight and bantamweight – and will be going after this third world title next month on February 4th against Wilfredo Vazquez (21-1-1, 18 KO’s) at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Like Pacquiao, Donaire isn’t going to stick around long enough to fight the very top guy in the division and will instead pick up the empty World Boxing Association and then go after the WBC title holder before moving up in weight to try and pick up a title at featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight and maybe light welterweight.

If Donaire can pick up a title at 140, it would be his 7th division world title, putting him within one of Pacquiao’s mark of 8 world titles. At that point you can easily see Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum putting him in against the weakest of the welterweight champions in order for Donaire to match Pacquiao by winning his 8th division world title.

I can’t see it happening. Beyond the super bantamweight division unless Arum can spot out an especially weak featherweight champion that he figures Donaire can beat.

The 27-year-ol Vazquez is going to have a big say so in what Donaire can accomplish. He’s not going to just give in the Filipino star and let him win. He’s going to be giving him problems and could pull off an upset if he can come up with a strong fight.

Miguel Vazquez decisions Ameth Diaz

IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (30-3, 13 KO’s) defeated challenger Ameth Diaz (30-11, 21 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision last night at the Caliseo Olympico de La UG, Guadalajara, Mexico. The final judges scores were 120-107, 120-107 and 119-108. This was the third successful title defense for the 25-year-old Vazquez.
