Why some fans dislike Amir Khan

Image: Why some fans dislike Amir KhanBy Hector Gonzalez: I’m getting really tired of Amir Khan fans accusing boxing fans such as myself of prejudice for not liking Khan, that boxing fans don’t like him because of his ethnic decent. It has nothing to do with that. I thought I’d write a commentary as to why boxing fans such as myself have always believed that Khan was nothing but a hype job. Pay close attention.

1.) Jorge Linares vs Tony De Marco. Let me start with this, it may sound off topic but try to follow. Linares, Khan’s friend who is also trained by Freddy Roach and promoted by Golden Boy was in fact a much bigger prospect then Khan was. During the Linares vs De Marco fight this past October, the HBO commentators where even bold enough to say that Linares was one of the ‘best fighters they have ever seen’, even comparing him to Sugar Ray Robinson. The out come was a bloody mess in which, Linares, the heavy favorite was TKO’d by a much less skilled pressure fighter with a good chin, strong punches, and most importantly much heart.

Why I bring up Linares, who Freddy Roach is on record saying that ‘Linares is a bigger prospect then Khan’, is so that Amir Khan supporters can get the idea of what would happen if Khan was to face a good fighter, with a good chin and solid punch…. Fighters like Marquez, Rios, Ortiz or Guerrero will literally rearrange Khan’s face- to put it bluntly, Khan is not on their league.

2.) What’s up with the ego! I honestly do not have any idea why Khan thinks he actually has a chance against the likes of Marquez or Mayweather—No idea. There is no person that Khan has fought and genuinely beat that even comes close to the skill level of Money May or Marquez… Not even close… And also, age is not an excuse. De La Hoya was a World Champion at 19; by the age of 25 Morales and Barrera where already on their way to being Hall of Famers and around that age gave one of the best fights the sport has ever witness when they both fought each other for the first time. By the age of 23 Salvador Sanchez had already defeated a long list of full blown world champs. And it was also at this age that Pacquiao would initiate a war with El Terrible Morales. Khan hasn’t proven anything.

Who has Khan beat? I’m not being sarcastic, like really, who has he beat? He boldly challenges tier 1 fighters when all who he has fought have been tier 3 fighters at best!

The moment I first realized that I did not like Khan was when he boldly challenges Marquez— Asking him to move up to 140, when Marquez’s best weight is at 135, asking him to fight in the UK— as if Khan was the three time world Champion and future Hall of Famer and not the other way around. When Marquez, who had Pacquiao on his mind, refuses the silly offer by an opponent that is no where near Marquez’s is league, Khan has the balls to say that ‘Marquez is dodging him’.

3.) Khan is extremely one dimensional! I don’t even have to argue this point. If

after watching the Lamont Peterson fight, you don’t agree that Khan is one dimensional then you are in serious denial.

First off, Khan cannot fight in the inside, and although he looks really good fighting at a distance, there is no game in the inside. Also it appears that you can’t always trust Khan at a distance either, Prescott knocked him out at a distance and Maidana caught Khan multiple times at a distance as well.

Keep this in mind, all those combinations that Khan throws are flashy- no power at all, and take note of the pattern. What happens when a good fighter like Maidana, Prescott and Peterson are able to walk through his punches?

No defense! Peterson was landing some very basic shots on the inside, no shoulder rolls, no face rolls, not lateral movement—the only weapon that Khan had was to foul by pushing the head down, head locking and pushing.

No Power—take note on how EASILY Peterson was able to walk through everything that Khan had, Easily. Matter of fact both Peterson and Maidana never stopped coming forward.
Again, Khan has never KO’d anyone. He’s more of slapper puncher than a hitter.

4.) Why no rematches. Rematches are an essential part of the sport. To be a true

Champion you have to be ‘undisputed.’ In the case of Khan, he’s crying for Peterson to give him a rematch when he denied Prescott, Maidana, and Barrera a rematch! What makes Khan call the shots, he’s not even that good.

Morales and Barrera fought 3 wars, gave their hearts out to be called the undisputed champ, no questions asked- just gave it their all, and the final result is that they both deserve to be called living legends of the sport.

Israel Vasquez vs Rafael Marquez gave 4 fights, sacrificed their health for the sake of being called the undisputed champ, two of their fights won ‘fight of the year’ and truly one of the best rivalries in the sport. Again, both walked away as true champions- and again both made their mark as future hall of famers.

Mayweather fought Castillo 2 times to prove he was truly the undisputed champ, Ortiz will be fighting Berto in early 2012…

If Khan truly wants to climb up the later he needs to fight Prescott and Maidana again, then maybe Khan truly has the right for a rematch.

5.) In Peterson’s home town or not, Peterson was the better fighter!

First and foremost, anyone saying that Peterson was given the victory because they fought in his backyard, should really just be choking on their words.

What happened when Marco Antonio Barrera stepped into Khan’s backyard. Barrera suffered a head butt in the first round and the fight was allowed to go 5rds? Where’s the respect for the Hall of Famer in Khan’s backyard? Not even a ‘no-contest’? Not even a rematch? Really!?

What about the controversial stoppage vs McCloskey in Khan’s backyard after a MINOR cut under McCloskey’s left eye.

If you’re really going to criticize the referee Joe Cooper for deducting points from Khan during the Khan/ Peterson match this weekend- Then I’m sure you’re also critical about Joe Cortez who completely eliminated Maidana’s body punches by breaking them up when Khan would hold on to Maidana’s hand. Mind you, the rule is ‘PUNCH AND GET OUT’, why did Joe Cortez break them up and help Khan create a distance rather then let Maidana ‘punch and get out’… Oh man, that would have been a sight, Khan getting hit with Maidana’s body punches in the inside.

Also if you caught the fight on HBO, try catching the reply on Sky sports where three former British World Champs where commenting the fight all commenting on how dirty Khan was fighting and how he deserved to lose.

Keep in mind that it wasn’t just the pushing, it was also the pushing down on the head, and the head locking!

There you have it! Khan is nothing but a hype job!
