Image: Paul Williams and Erislandy Lara could fight in separate bouts on 1/21 on ShowtimeBy Chris Williams: If you’re into watching Erislandy Lara and Paul Williams fight you might want to tune in for a possible doubleheader on Showtime on January 21st. No, these guys won’t be fighting each other, according to Dan Rafael.

It doesn’t quite make sense to have a doubleheader with these two fighters when they have unfinished business with each other after Williams beat Lara by a controversial 12 round majority decision last July. It seems pretty clear that all three judges had it wrong for that fight, as Williams took a serious beating and never looked good. But to have them fighting other fighters, likely lower level guys, it just seems wrong.

Why put them on the same card after what happened between them last time? All that does is fan the flames. It’s like a tease. It looks as if Showtime is hoping to get interest in seeing these two guys back together again by matching them against other fighters on the same card.

I think it’s an awful idea. Boxing fans saw a fight that was clearly a win for Lara, only to see Williams win it. Now fans have to sit through fights with these guys going against other opposition instead of each other. It’s like watching a movie that ends badly, and then you have to sit though clips of it while watching other movies. Forget that. I won’t waste my time with watching this card if it does get made.

I don’t mind seeing Lara but I don’t see him on the same card as Williams unless they’re fighting each other. And I’m not really interested in seeing them fight again. I already saw Lara beat Williams, so why should I have to see it again? Those two need to move on in another direction. The judges’ decision has been ignored by the boxing public, and there’s no point in a rematch or any kind of teaser situation like this proposed set of bouts.
