Image: Wladimir sees Mormeck as Tyson-likeBy Allen Fox: IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) met with challenger former WBA/WBC cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22 KO’s) earlier today in Paris, France to hype their fight on December 10th at the ESPRIT arena, Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

The 6’6″ Wladimir, who towers over the 5’10” Mormeck, has had to build Mormeck up because no one is giving the 39-year-old Mormeck even a slight chance of winning this fight.

Here is just some of the complimentary things that Wladimir has to say about Mormeck as quoted by the Daily Mail: “He [Mormeck] is serious this fight. He knows what he is talking about. I would compare him with Mike Tyson. He is never going backwards like David Haye [did in his loss to Wladimir]. He knocked him [Haye] down. It’s something I could not do.”

You kind have to see this from Wladimir’s perspective. He chose a soft opponent to fight in this bout and since no one is giving Mormeck any chance, Wladimir is having to work overtime as the PR guy for Mormeck to try and build him up.

It’s going to take a lot of hard work from Wladimir to convince boxing fans that the aging Mormeck is anything like a Mike Tyson. Mormeck may have been a huge puncher while fighting in the cruiserweight division, but in moving up to the heavyweight division in 2009, Mormeck hasn’t shown any of the same punching power that he did at cruiserweight.

In Mormeck’s fights against Vinny Maddalone, Fres Oquendo and Timur Ibragimov, Mormeck hasn’t come close to hurting any of them and has won three consecutive controversial decisions against these guys.

At 5’10” 215 lbs, Mormeck hasn’t gained a lot of weight since moving up. He’s put on only 15 pounds, but isn’t punching with the strength of a heavyweight. He would have been smart to get a clue by his third fight at heavyweight that he doesn’t have the pop in his punches to compete against the better fighters. But Wladimir has rewarded Mormeck for sticking it out by giving him a good payday. Don’t expect this to be anything close to a competitive fight. Mormeck is too small, too weak and too old to be any threat to Wladimir.
