Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Juan will have problems with the weight, says Steward

By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Emanuel Steward feels that the extra weight that 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez is forced to put on to take this fight against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will hurt him and cause him possibly lose on November 12th.

The Pacquiao-Marquez fight will take place at a 144 lb catchweight, which isn’t much of a catchweight advantage for Marquez when you look at how badly he fought the last time he bulked up to that high for his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. two years ago.

Speaking with eastsideboxing.com, Steward said “The difference I see right now this time is physically. I believe Manny is bigger and will have the strength and size advantage, even though they might weight in similar. Based on the fight Marquez had with Floyd, it just sows coming in at 142 or 144 didn’t fit well on his [Marquez] frame. It’s like trying to put a Mac truck on a Volkswagen frame. It just doesn’t work.”

Steward is right. Marquez doesn’t have the frame to carry at 144 lbs or anything over 140. Pacquiao gets away with it because he’s so fast and speed enables you to get away with a lot more than what slower fighters can do when they put on weight. That’s not to say that Pacquiao hasn’t slowed down because of the weight, because he clearly has.

In looking at Pacquiao recently working out with his trainer Freddie Roach, Pacquiao looked painfully slow when he tried to bounce around the ring like he used to. You could see Pacquiao mentally turning his gears, forcing himself to try and bounce around in between throwing shots but the speed wasn’t there and he looked like someone who had lead in his feet. The weight gain that Pacquiao has put on since moving up from featherweight has really hurt him and in my estimation shorted his career. He’s making more money at welterweight, but the cost is he won’t be fighting too much longer. But he should be able to beat Marquez because mostly due to the added weight that Marquez will be putting on for this fight. It’s going to hurt him more than it already has Pacquiao.

pacman 144lbs and margarito 151lbs catchweight, it’s up to marquez to weigh down to 141 lbs if he want, fight must go on. note pacman won against margarito. if marquez win he’s become legend in mexico and if he lose nothing special fighter he is one of those.

  • Boxing Kangaroo says:

More excuses to take the gloss of Pacquiao’s anticipated anniliation of another Mexican. Getting pretty boring

  • Don't Test Me, Bro! says:

More catchweight bull$hit from your cowardly Filipino boxer, Manny ‘I hired a firm to audit my finances then fired them when they told me I ain’t worth $hit’ Pac-Broke-iao.

  • pakpak says:

this is exciting fight marquez vs pacman last man standing win. marquez is a brave boxer, his ability in skill and power is unlimited, only only opponent of pacman that very thin questionable score, if and if marquez no knockdown in third round i believe marquez win the fight in 3rd round clearly knockout that’s why he lose… 3rd fight this is close fight i can’t wait i’m excited.

Speak for yourself V, I ain’t Filipino or live there.

And why all this BS about Marquez and weight, he does not have to come into the ring that heavy. Pacquaio gave up 16lbs to Margarito and many fighters before him in various weight divisions have done the same.
Maynever did Marquez over by coming in over weight, at Full WW and thats fine with me because Maynever gets you millions. The problem is Pac brings in Millions also. You want to fight the best you have to give up something, just like if Pacquaio takes on Maynever he will have to take the test. As I see it that is all he should have to do, not bend to more Maynever demands eg Train in USA. Just saying lol.
Gonna watch Maynever UD Ortiz still as Maynever has great skills and still gets away with his dirty forearm and elbows :)

Go Marquez…the world outside of the pilipines wants you to win!

  • KILLERBUD says:

pac-puppet is on roids. Men naturally get more heavy with age, and I beleive Marquez is the superior boxer of the two and will have his vengence.

  • Rodger says:

    Rodger

Stop talking about steroid on Pacquiao
as long he is fighting and have a permit to fight all of you shut up. Why Mayweather not filling protest to boxing commission why until now Pacquiao have permit to fight just asking

  • Rodger says:

    Dan Ambrose and Emmannuel Steward
must see Chris William right away because Crissy said that he saw Marquez in pretty good shape and he will beat Pacquiao easy people dont know who is really the fortune teller between you three

It was probably Flody’s people looking for steroids

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    wahahahahahaha

  • DamnIT says:

Emanuel please don’t be a cry baby but if you want to, now is the time to tell your fighter Phee to back out of the fight. Nah! not for hefty $5M. Don’t fool yourself Emanuel by making it appear Phee is in a disadvantage. Did he not say he won the last two fights so what’s his problem. And don’t make any excuses this early of the fight you fool.

  • Olivia says:

It was probably Flody’s people looking for steroids

  • Robbie says:

People, Pacquiao house in Los Angeles was just burglarized 20-30 minutes ago. The police doesn´t know how much and what was taken and they cannot get in touch with Pacquiao. He´s out of town. Of course, he´s in the Philippines with Ariza and it´s morning hours there, as far as I know.

  • polo says:

@huh? your incorrect manny day of matches comes in 147 or 148 as he did vs antoino. he comes in on offical scale at 144 so he can keep that little man persona. he is a full welt dont kid yourself

  • The Boxing Guru says:

I agree Huh, I look for both fighters to come in under the limit even after hydrating. Should be a good fight but I have Pacquiao by KO within 7 rds.

  • rjHill says:

I just think Pac man carries the extra wieght better than the smaller framed Juan./

  • huh? says:

No reason Marquez can’t come in below 144. Catchweight is just a maximum weight limit for Pac.
And if you wanna look at their previous fights, they both usually come in at the mid 140s anyway.
