Image: Pacquiao-Marquez: Roach doesn't want Manny to be nice on November 12thBy Chris Williams: Freddie Roach feels that Manny Pacquiao has become too compassionate lately in fights against Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley. Roach doesn’t want Pacquiao to fight that way against Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12th, because Pacquiao struggled the last two times he faced the tough Mexican warrior and appeared to lose both fights in the minds of many boxing fans.

Roach wants to make sure that Pacquiao can take the fight out of the judges’ hands by knocking Marquez out. But for Pacquiao to do this he’ll have to become a much meaner fighter, and Roach doesn’t know how to teach Pacquiao how to be mean. That’s one area where you either are born with the killer instinct or you don’t.

Speaking with inquirer.net, Roach said “I want to see a knockout, I’d really like to. He is too compassionate. I feel Manny won both fights [against Marquez. We were the ones that were robbed during his first two fights with Pacquiao.”

I think it’s hard for a trainer to accept when his fighter has been beaten. It’s difficult for them to separate themselves from their fighter and look at the fights in a realistic way. Pacquiao should have lost both fights to Marquez, but being the more popular fighter, Pacquiao received a gift draw in the first fight in 2004 and a gift 12 round decision in 2008. Unfortunately, Marquez was the better fighter in both fights and this is coming from someone without a dog in the hunt. I’m just telling it like I see it. Marquez dominated Pacquiao and should have won both fights.

As for Pacquiao and his niceness problem, it really doesn’t matter here. If he goes all out trying to get a knockout, he’s just going to open himself up more for counters from Marquez. Fighting angry will just cause Pacquiao to rush in thoughtlessly and fight like an amateur when he needs to be using his brain on top of his shoulders to try and win.
