Image: Froch can be considered the home fighter against Ward in Atlantic CityBy Scott Gilfoid: There’s been some squawking from Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KO’s) about WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KO’s) getting another home fight with his October 29th Super Six finals bout against Froch taking place in the United States at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Froch is from Nottingham, England, and fought his first fight of the Super Six tournament at home against Andre Dirrell in October 2009, winning what a lot of boxing fans saw as a hometown decision with two European judges giving him the decision, while a Mexican judge picking Dirrell as the winner.

Froch has since fought all of his fights away from England. He’s now fighting Ward in the U.S, but really you can make a case that Froch is more of the home fighter in this bout than Ward. Froch just fought in Atlantic City last June, beating 42-year-old Glen Johnson by a 12 round majority decision. Froch seemed to have a lot of crowd support over there as far as I could tell.

Ward is from Oakland, California, which is on the opposite of the United States on the West coast. Ward isn’t likely to have many of his fans traveling all the way from Oakland to see him fight on the East coat. Unlike England, boxing fans in the U.S are more regional. You typically don’t get west coast fans backing fighters that are from east coast.

That’s just the way the U.S, which is completely different from the UK. Over there, they essentially back any of their fighters no matter what part of the UK they come from when the guy is facing a foreign fighter. As such, the Froch-Ward fight will likely see Froch as having more fans than Ward. At the very least, it will be even with the crowd divided. Froch has loyal British fans that will be traveling from England to watch him fight, in addition to the local east coast fans that Froch won over with his win over Glen Johnson. So you see, Froch is more of the home fighter than Ward.
